I live! I do. I think.

So, I haven't posted anything in more than a month. Did you miss me? Nah, didn't think so.

Here is how things are: Napier, though still sunnier than most of New Zealand, is getting cold; winter's started. I'm trying to only shower between the hours of 9am and 5pm, because we have to keep the windows cracked in the bathroom since there's no extractor fan and it gets very, very chilly indeed. Our house is not particularly well-insulated, nor are there any heaters. We wear lots of warm things and spend as much time as possible under blankets. As we still don't have a washing machine, and it takes time and money to go to the laundromat, I'm still mostly washing my clothes in the sink outside before wringing them out and hanging them up to dry, but what with all the cold water involved this is becoming increasingly impractical. I hung out my laundry this morning and was three-quarters of the way to work before I regained feeling in my hands.

Oh, work! The only other housekeeper - the one who has been in the business for decades, who works guaranteed 30-hour weeks while I fluctuate between 'enough to live on, just' and 'fuck you, go ask your parents' - injured her knee last week, unexpectedly leaving me the only person changing sheets at the Tennyson hotel until she gets better. On the upside: woo, I worked 32.5 hours last week, and I'll probably work something close to that this week! Fat paycheck, here I come! On the downside, I have just worked 8 days in a row, so my feet are killing me and I haven't been doing any of the artwork I meant to because I just come home, crawl under a blanket and go into an internet-coma. (I should work on that.) Today I did 9 full cleans in one go, which probably doesn't mean a lot to people, but it's quite a bit of work. It was a long, tiring day, but as a result of getting eeeeeverything on the list done, I shall have Thursday off. Hooray!

I did make myself a fabulous dinner, though, of pork belly slow-baked in my formidable marinade, on a bed of basmati with a side of steamed sugarsnap peas and baby carrots (carrots were good, but sugarsnaps a little mushy; will add five minutes after the carrots, next time). There was a frozen apply pie for afters. I should really put the leftovers away, but I am under a blanket now and moving seems counterintuitive.

At the moment I am full and warm enough and content. But I do keep wondering what I'll be doing a few months from now.

work, weather, napier
