i ... i don't want to hate DPNs. but, man, they're just so hard to wrangle! i cannot seem to get the hang of doing it smoothly. i'm not even worrying about ladders; i'm talking about where do the freaking needles go. they get in the way of the working needles and get my yarn twisted around them and i just want them to knock it off! wrangling ( Read more... )

I can highly recommend this site, it really helped me out when I made my first pair of socks. It takes you right through the process and is very clear and easy to understand. Lots of useful pics too!

Starting out with very few stitches on double points is hard. I'd suggest knitting forty or so stitches flat for a few inches, then knitting them onto the double points, ten at a time. That way you can practice handing double points without the hardest bit, which is starting off.

I find that it's easy just to forget altogether that you have more than two needles, and hold only the two that you're working with for that row. let the other ones dangle down; they'll stay put, if you're knitting with enough tension.
DPN's are kinda tough at first, but seriously, once you get the hang of it, you'll be knitting nothing but big giant tubes :P
