D. "Did I die?"
"Parker, are you even listening to me?" Hardison demanded, slamming his hand on the table for emphasis.
She looked up at him and rolled her eyes. "Yes, I'm listening." In truth, she was mostly tuning him out. His lecture was one she had heard enough times before that she didn't really have to listen to know what he was yelling about.
Hardison slumped back in his chair. "So you just don't care that I was sitting here, freaking out about your safety?"
"Did I die?" Parker asked, her tone indicating that she was bored with this conversation.
"Not this time," he said. "But you could have. Parker, you jumped off that building blind. You weren't wearing your rig. You had no idea what was on the ground on that side. You could have been jumping onto a greenhouse or a rusty iron fence."
"But I didn't," she said. "There were flowers beds and grass and I didn't even hurt myself. Though those poor flowers will never be the same again." As far as Parker was concerned, jumping from that building was an acceptable risk. If she hadn't jumped, she risked exposure and that would have compromised the entire job. Of course it never crossed her mind that if she broke her neck and died on the mark's property, that would also compromise the job.
Hardison shook his head. "What's it going to take to make you understand? You're part of a team now. More than a team. And your actions have an effect on all of us."
Parker considered that for a minute, her head bobbling from side to side and her lips pursed. "Well... okay. I mean, if something happened to me, who would you get to crawl through the air ducts?"
