'Bones': Emily Deschanel teases Brennan and Booth in bed

Emily Deschanel knows that fans of "Bones" have been waiting for years for Brennan and Booth to get together. But she's just glad that the long-anticipated coupling is finally over.

It's not that she has anything against co-star David Boreanaz or the story that gets them into bed in the May 14 season finale. Deschanel is just happy to have an answer to the will-they-or-won't they question.

"That is probably the most commonly asked question, either just by people on the street or by people interviewing me, so it is nice to tell people that it's happening. ... It should be surprising and good. I mean, I guess it's not surprising for people to know that it's happening, but the way it happens is surprising."

A week before the finale, Brennan decides she wants a baby and surprises Booth (Boreanaz) by asking him to be the father. In an interview last week, Deschanel wouldn't say much more about the specifics of their hookup, but she did share her thoughts on why now was the time to get them together and what fans can expect from the final three episodes of the season (including guest appearances by Stewie Griffin from "Family Guy" and Motley Crue).

What made this the right time to get Booth and Brennan together?
"It's something that everyone has been waiting for, for a long time. I think that Hart Hanson, the creator of the show, wanted to find a clever way to put them together that wouldn't forever taint everything on the show, and I think he figured out a nice way of doing it that obviously affects things in the future but doesn't completely ruin the chemistry that we have. I'm glad we waited this long.

Davidboreanaz-bones-290 "I don't think we should have waited too much longer than this to have something happen, but I think he figured a very clever way to do it. ... The concern is always that it will dissipate the romantic tension between the characters. And, you know, a lot of shows have died from that, so I think it was a matter of timing and figuring out the right way to do it so that it doesn't ruin everything for the show."

Will we see anything different from your character in the finale?
"You'll see a [much] softer Brennan. I don't know if it's very soft, but Brennan, you see her in a different situation. There was an episode in the season where we went undercover in the circus, and this is similar in that you get to see these characters in a totally different environment at times, and so you see a different side of the character."

Do you see Brennan's ability to relate to other people ingrained in her, or has she just refused to learn how to?
"No, I would say if you look at some of the episodes, especially this season, we have an episode ... 'The Bones that Foam.' You see Brennan asks Sweets [John Francis Daley] ... to help her interact with humans, and she admits that she's not good at it ... and he tries to teach her what different expressions look like: what happiness looks like, sadness. And she's just, you know, she kind of fails at it.

"It's not a lack of trying that gets her here, and I think that if you actually look from the beginning of season one to now, she has warmed up a lot. I know that sounds crazy because she still has a long way to go, but she has definitely changed. And I think that she's opened up with her emotions. She's learned to interact with people a little bit."

How was it having Eric Millegan (who plays Zack) back for the finale?
"It's wonderful to have him back. I enjoy his company so much. I became friends with him over the years, like I have with most of the cast, and it was really hard to not have him around all the time. But that said, when he came back for the finale, it was as if no time had passed. He just walked in, and it was great to act with him again and hang out with him on set. It was a breath of fresh air."

What can you say about the Stewie Griffin appearance?
"I thought it was such a brilliant crossover kind of episode. ... I haven't seen the end result, but the script was so funny and moving, and it's kind of got emotion and drama. Basically, in that episode, I ask Booth to father a child with me, and he starts to hallucinate and sees Stewie from 'Family Guy.' The way it's done is to be believable. I mean, if you're going to see a hallucination, it might as well -- it could be a cartoon as easily as it could be another human being, so I think it's done very well."

And Motley Crue in the finale?
"Well, it turns out that Booth and Brennan have a little connection to Motley Crue. I guess they go back, go way back, and Motley Crue ends up actually playing in the lab, which was totally crazy. [They] kind of transformed the lab so they could play there. I don't want to reveal too much about the episode to say how that happens, but basically it turns out that Booth and Brennan have known Motley Crue randomly."

And another one that's a little bit different:

Bones - Emily Deschanel on the Finale and Next Season

Re: Motley Crue guest-starring in the season finale
“Motley Crue man, yeah. My, my 15-year-old male self was freaking out. Was, was very jealous of me. I don’t know, I don’t know what that means but I did feel like I should be a 15-year-old boy or something. Yeah it was pretty crazy to have Motley Crew on set. Very different, very different. I would never dreamed that I would have Motley Crue on the set of Bones, in my wildest dreams, so pretty crazy. Or Stewie from The Family Guy that’s almost more crazy.”

Re: The season finale is not your usual "Bones" episode
“Yes, very different. I’m not allowed to talk about it that much. I mean I, I can only reveal certain things but yeah you definitely see different sides of Booth and Brennan and all of the characters really. It’s a great episode that brings back a lot of characters that people have seen and really like from past episodes and brings them all together. But there’s, you know, kind of unique situations so it brings out different sides of people. And you know lots of twists and turns, and Motley Crue’s in there and, it’s almost like a film noir kind of episode.”

Re: Booth and Brennan finally getting into bed together
“Well, I mean you know in the final episode Booth and Brennan are in bed together and we shot that already, but I think it will happen in a way that will surprise people and at the same time will be very much Booth and Brennan. You know there’s humor, there’s passion, there’s, there’s romance but you know it’s very much in the vein of our show and the characters’ relationship. And so, it’s pretty different. And I think that it’s done in a way that doesn’t, you know, totally ruin the sexual tension for future episodes. It will definitely make things more interesting and add a whole new element to our relationship in the future but it’s not done in a way that dissipates our sexual tension. And so that’s a, you know that’s what I was concerned about and I think everybody was concerned. So I think it’s successful in that way”.

Re: how the season finale will affect things going into next season
“I’ve heard many little things about Season 5. You know they’re just beginning to write that now so you know I know less than what they know and they don’t know very much. So I know kind of because it ends with a kind of cliffhangerish thing. I know a little bit what happens after that but it’s hard for me to talk about it without people having seen the episode. But definitely Booth and Brennan will have a new dynamic the beginning of Season 5. As you would imagine since we end up, we’re in bed together in the end of Season 4 but it will, we will have a whole new dynamic the beginning of Season 5. Our relationship will change”

Re: will we continue to see the post-Zack intern rotation next season?
“Yeah, I believe so. I think we’re going to continue that for a little while. You know at a certain point we might need to make a decision but for now, we are, I think everyone’s enjoying having these different characters coming through and the, the different elements that they bring to each episode. And it’s great, all of the different Zack replacements, if you want to call them, squints, squints, rotating squints, they’re all in the - or not all but a lot of them are in the finale along with Zack and so that’s fun to have all of them together.”
