Bringing a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro up to date takes longer than I expected... The Win2k install went great -- nice and unattended. But then the updates begin...
Install SP4... reboot... install IE6... reboot... update Windows Update components... reboot... WU pass 1 -- 25 critical updates... reboot... WU pass 2 -- 1 critical update... WU pass 3 -- install DirectX 9.0c...
This could go on for a while. And this is just to bring Windows itself up to date. Next I get to install Office 2000 and update it.
Everything is going smoothly. No complaints. I just didn't realize how many steps it would take.
I will also say (in Microsoft's defense) that I'm very glad for Windows Update. If I had to manually go find, download, and install every patch this would be a nightmare.
Now that I made it this far I might as well log the rest of the process:
...reboot... WU pass 4 -- 1 critical update... WU pass 5 -- install WMP9... WU pass 6 -- 2 critical updates... reboot... WU pass 7 -- install .NET Framework... reboot... WU pass 8 -- 1 critical update... reboot... WU pass 9 -- 1 critical update -- wait, .NET Framework 1.1 SP1? Coulda sworn I just installed that. Oh well, here we go again... reboot... WU pass 10 -- w00t! No more updates.
Time to move on to Office...
