Wednesday Word: Nonversation

Nonversation - noun.

Ah, the portmanteau! They are new words made by combining two other words. Those still in self-isolation or working from home may be desperate for a bit of nonversation--useless small talk or a meaningless conversation.

Although it sounds like a hip new word, at least one example in print goes back to 1997 in Andrew Field's biography of Vladmir Nabokov, Nabokov, His Life In Part: "There is always a bit of jovial nonversation at the newsstand."
