Funny story:
The reason I opted to use this word is because of an incident where I used it when speaking to a co-worker and she looked at me as if I had started speaking Klingon. I thought it was common before that because my mom uses it a lot. But that day I realized that it's actually a bit archaic. LOL

I definitely heard it growing up on the East coast, is it also a Yiddish word?

No. I think it's just regular ol' English.

Also, that co-worker was kinda dumb. So maybe that's why she didn't know it. LOL
