Some in 30: Heroes vs. Villains

For this round at somein30, I opted to do super hard mode. XD I decided to focus on the Narnia fandom because I think there some interesting vibes with regards to heroism, villainy, and the relationship between them. I planned to do 20 icons, but with all the grading I have to do, I only got to 18 (8 of Edmund and 10 of the White Witch)

Be prepared for a long ramble.

Edmund started out as villain-ish. I'm not sure I would call him pure villain even though he was ready to sell out his family for Turkish Delight and the chance to become a prince (and eventually king) of Narnia because he's only villain-ish in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. For the rest of the series (that he's in), he's quite heroic and is known as King Edmund the Just. (I love the pun in Prince Caspian. "It's King Edmund, actually....Just king, though. Peter's the High King."

After he betrays his family by going to the White Witch, he's taken prisoner. He starts to realize that the White Witch is as evil as Lucy had said she was and begins to feel guilty. However, everytime he attempts to "save" someone out of his guilt, he betrays his family even more. He tries to save Mr. Tumnus by giving more information about his family. The White Witch realizes that he's trying to save face and tells Mr. Tumnus that Edmund "turned [him] in for sweeties (Turkish Delight)."

The second time, he tries to prevent the White Witch from hurting the Fox by telling her that Aslan and his family were headed toward the Stone Table. The Fox gives Edmund a sad look before the White Witch cruelly turns the Fox into stone.

Eventually, he's rescued and redeemed by Aslan who tells everyone that Edmund has been forgiven. No one knew what they talked about, but whatever Aslan said changed Edmund. From this point forward, he leaves his old self behind and becomes a just king and a hero. He is forgiven, and Aslan tells everyone to never speak of Edmund's betrayal again.

However, a price has to be paid. Edmund's forgiveness does not come free. Aslan sacrifices his life for Edmund and is killed by the White Witch, but later, because of the Deep Magic, he comes back to life and defeats the White Witch for good.

In the film version, he tells Peter, "I've seen what the White Witch can do, and I've helped her do it. We can't leave these people behind to suffer for it." Here we see Edmund's change of heart. But the pivotal moment where we really see Edmund's change from villain-ish to a hero is when he literally risks his life to destroy the White Witch's wand. Thankfully, Lucy is able to use her cordial to heal him.

It might seem a little odd, but I'm jumping into the second film where Edmund supports Lucy and says that he believes her. He refers back to their first time in Narnia and recalls that no one believed her back then but that she was right.

While this is a film only moment, I think the next scene I'm mentioning really shows that Edmund has changed and will remain heroic despite what others do and think. At Aslan's How, after the werewolf and the hag try to bring back the White Witch, Edmund breaks the ice and the White Witch's "spell." Here he's ready to jump in even when others are distracted and not doing what they should. His belief is strong, and he knows what to do.

For pure villains, I decided to go with the White Witch, Jadis. She's definitely a villain set in stone. Before she is brought to Narnia, she used the Deplorable Word to destroy her own sister as well as her entire world. In the books, her description has a femme fatale vibe: pale skin, red lips, and dark hair. Not to mention, she is not above trying to appeal to males to manipulate them to do what she wants.

The film takes a unique approach in that they give her reddish-orangeish-yellowish hair and natural-toned lip color. Her dress is also interesting as it demonstrates her disintegration. She starts out with her ice crown and a white fur coat to go with her billowy white gown. As her power weakens, her crown melts and her dress gets slimmer and darker until she's dressed in her battle garb: a chain-mail dress with Aslan's mane draped around her shoulders.

Here are the icons!
