On November 6 2007 I had gotten up at 6:45am to go to my Tuesday/Thursday class that starts at 8am. It was about 7:30am when I was well on my way to school just passing the Thousand Oaks & Wetmore intersection in the South bound lane on the left side.
At this time there was at white Lincoln Navigator in front of me in the same lane as we approached the new light in front of Johnson Controls. In the opposite North bound lane a white Chevy S10 had just past that light and for some reason or another went completely from the North bound lane to the South bound lane. The white Navigator a head of me tries to avoid a head on collision by turning sharply to the right with the S10 doing the same. The two vehicles avoid the head on collision but still glanced each other on the sides of the vehicles from about half way to the end of the side.
Immediately after first contact the driver of the S10 has been pushed back into the North lane and over compensates for the necessary corrections needed to stabilize the vehicle and comes back into the South bound lane and hits my car with the front corner of the S10 at the driver side door of my car at the rear view exterior mirror and grinds down the remaining length of my car. After that, shit has hit the fan.
After making contact with my car the S10 looses control entirely and again moves into the South bound lane and has a near full head on collision with a silver eclipse. The impact had enough force to stop the eclipse and crush the front end and cause it to rotate to the left exposing the driver side to a second T-bone collision by the Cavalier behind hit. The S10 had the driver front wheel torn off the truck; on top of that the wheel (metal part) was broken in half vertically. The S10 then continues to scream down and into the South lane and onto the guard rail and coming to a stop in the grass on the opposite side of the road than where it started.
When the S10 made impact with the eclipse three teens were ejected from the vehicle. Two of them were sent in to the grass on either sides of the road leaving one to land in the center of the street. Along with that, when the eclipse was T-boned by the Cavalier, that car was sandwiched by a Contour trying to avoid the accident. This left now 4 of 6 vehicles completely immobilized.
As soon as my car stopped moving from the collision and my slamming on the brakes the first thing I did was call my father to let him know I had just been in a car accident and to get to Thousand Oaks and Wetmore ASAP; then I called my step dad and told him that I had just been in a car accident and that I was alright. Once I was off the phone I took off my seatbelt and tried to open my door, but it wouldn’t open. I had to kick the door open to get out. After I got out and did a quick survey of the damage I took a quick look around at my surroundings; this is when things got really crazy.
I saw smoke billowing out of the hood of the eclipse and decided to run over to offer assistance if necessary. As I approached the car I cold hear screams of a man in dire need of help. When I got to the eclipse there were already a few people at the passenger door, which was facing my direction at the time. Getting a better look as to what all was going on I saw that the drive was no longer in the driver seat, but was in the passenger seat screaming that his knee hurt over and over again and that his car was going to blow up. The people that were at the car before I was were trying to pull him from the car, but as they did this the man only screamed louder in pain; his right knee appeared to be broken, possibly shattered. I forced my way in closer the man in the car to do what I could. I then told the people to stop pulling the man and I tried to reach and turn off the car, but couldn’t with the man in the way. I then calmed the man down and helped him focus and asked him to turn off his car. It took a moment for the request to sink in, but the man did what I asked. Now that the car was off I told the man that his car wasn’t going to blow up; especially now that the car was off. When I was on my way over to the eclipse I noticed that there were people on their cell phones; I assumed that they were calling the police and the sort. With that knowledge I told the man that help was on the way and to remain in the car until the paramedics arrived to prevent further damage to him-self. Once that was taken care of and telling the people who were there before I was to keep an eye on the man in the eclipse I proceeded to make my way further down the accident area. That’s when I saw the beginning of what was to come.
Lying in the middle of the street was a teen boy who had already had people around him; one of which was holding his head and neck strait. As I got closer and had a better look at the teen I saw that he was bleeding profusely from his mouth and right side of the head and a pool of blood was forming on the ground beneath his head. The person at the teen’s head was panicking not knowing if the teen was dead or alive. I then knelt down next to him and stated that I was going to check if the teen had a pulse and breathing. Thankfully the teen had both, although I must say that his pulse was abnormally steady. The teen was still unresponsive though; his eyes were open put wasn’t moving or focusing on anything. I told the person supporting the head that we’re going to have to continue monitoring him until the paramedics arrive when a woman appeared stating that she was a nurse. The nurse proceeded to take over monitoring and caring for the teen. With the teen being alive, for the most part, and the nurse tending to his immediate needs I got up and moved to check out the rest of the accident scene and see if anyone else needed help.
The people in the other two cars, the cavalier and contour, were alive and moving about. Nothing too serious was wrong with them so I moved one of the two vehicles I hadn’t looked at yet, the S10 and Navigator. Seeing the S10 off the road and in the grass I decided to check on that one next. As I passed the guard rail where the ditch is there was a teen boy sitting down in the grass unaware of his surroundings. As I got closer to the S10 I could see movement in the bed of the truck. There was a girl and a guy still in the bed moving around in a delusional manor. I asked if they were ok, but they didn’t respond. The shock from the accident must have caused them to loose awareness of their surroundings. Seeing movement led me to the conclusion that they were alive at the very least, so I wrote them off as being good and went to check on the cab of the truck. When I got to the cab I noticed that the passenger door was open and no one in the passenger seat. Taking a quick look around the outside of the truck I saw a teen walking around near the front of the truck in a zombie like fashion. Taking a closer look at him I saw that he was bleeding and looked roughed up; he had to be truck. Looking back in the cab, there were still two teens inside. One of them was on the bench in the back and another in the driver seat with his back to the driver door. The one in the driver seat was grabbing at the steering wheel as if it were the door handle. His right leg was on the seat bench and left leg was half on the bench and on the floor board. I told them to sit tight and to try not to move and that help was on the way.
At this point I started to head back to my car to check on the first vehicle hit. I was about a quarter of the way to my car when all the paramedics and firefighters arrived on the scene. I got a hold of one of the paramedics and gave him the low down as to what all was going on and where everyone who was injured at. That’s when I saw the other two teens on either side of the street in the grass. The emergency workers saw the teen that was closer to the truck on the South bound side and I pointed out the one on the North bound side. Now that they emergency crew was there and took over the scene I offered assistance where it was needed. It didn’t take long for me to have just been in the way, so I went to my car and check on the first vehicle hit.
Thankfully the woman and her daughter were ok. Their Navigator was still able to drive, although the driver side doors wouldn’t open. This is the time when Air Life landed in the grassy expanse in front of Johnson Controls. This is when I over heard the firefighters talking and they said they were going to have to cut the door off the S10 to get the driver out. I ran over there to the S10 to see how bad it was. When I got there the firefighters had already cut the door off and were starting to lay the teen on the stretcher and cut off his pants; that’s when I saw the extent of his injuries. The driver had a broken femur on the right side. The bone wasn’t exposed but was still a compound fracture. About half way down the thigh is where the break was. It looked like the part of the leg below the fracture was shifted upward about 5 inches. The worse part was hearing the screams of pain coming from the teen.
The teen I found in the street and the one with the broken femur were both sent to the hospital via Air Life. No one died in the accident; however, as I pointed out before, there were savvier injuries. When the clean was under way and the police were going to the accident scene the police found evidence that led them to believe that the teens in the S10 were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Later on, when the clean up was underway; I found out from the police that the teens in the S10 had a police record already and didn’t have a good reputation at school and with school police as well. From what police had gathered later in the day, the teens the S10 claimed that none of them were driving at the time of the accident. Then the story changed to the driver running away after the accident, making it a hit and run. I think that’s total and complete bull shit because I saw the teen in the driver seat had a broken femur. That kid wasn’t running anywhere.
Right now I’ve been dealing with police and insurance companies attempting to resolve the matter and move on; but if the stories keep changing like they do, it’s gonna be a while before that happens. I have a feeling that I’m going to have to file a law suit to get anything for my car. All in all, I just wish I would’ve stayed in bed to avoid the whole thing.
