“Don’t listen to any of them. They’re all liars and I like you and I don’t want you to go away like the others,” Sean screeched, fists clenched. The older children began to back away; Moira gave the them a stern a look and they backed off further.
“You all have books left over from the last tutor. You should read as much as you can before lessons start tomorrow,” she said, and the children began to walk towards their rooms. Charles smiled at her, then frowned as he felt something move in his trouser pocket. He reached into his pocket, and felt something slimy squiggle. He pulled the slimy thing out, only to see a muddy green frog in his hand.
Charles was unable to avoid making a noise of surprise at this discovery, and he heard Raven and Alex snicker.
“Why hello there, friend. I wonder how you got into my pocket, hmm? It’s not nearly as nice for you as the lake -- Alex!” Charles called out to the boy who had been standing on his right only moments before, “Would you mind returning this poor creature to the lake?”
Alex looked a touch sheepish as he came to collect the frog. After taking it in his hand he looked expectantly at Charles. He probably expects me to yell at him, thought Charles, so I shan’t.
“Thank you for agreeing to return him. Do you like amphibians?”
“Amphibi-whats?” Alex said. Charles saw Raven smile, then bite her lip.
“Oh, I guess that will be one of our science lessons. Perhaps we can even go out at catch them as part of the class.”
Moira spoke before Alex had a chance to reply. “I’ll show you to your room while the children do their reading.”
The crowd made its way up the stairs as Alex left the main hall. Moira waited until she heard six doors close before beckoning to Charles.
“You’re lucky, you know. The last man was gifted with a snake, and the man before that got a pile of spiders put in his bed.”
“How very creative. I must remember to put indigenous wildlife on the syllabus for biology.” Charles was unfazed by the notion of bugs in his bed. Despite his pointdextor demeanor, Charles’ curiosity was always stronger than his fear. This had led to many creatures finding their way into Charles’ bedroom as a child, much to his mother’s dismay.
“I have a feeling you might last longer than the others,” Moira said with a smile. The two of them walked to the third floor, in the servants’ quarters.
“This will be your room,” Moira said, pushing open a door to the left of the stairs.
Charles peered into the room and smiled. It was much larger than his previous room at the abbey, and the windows looked out to the lake. The view is going to be wonderful to wake up to, Charles thought. The windows were framed by alternating yellow and blue curtains.
“I’ll be getting you new curtains, since those ones are so old. I ordered some in last week, and with luck I’ll change them before the week is out,” Moira said, pulling Charles from his thoughts.
Charles gave the curtains an appreciative look before turning to face her. “Can you sew? It would be such a waste of cloth to just throw out those curtains.”
“I can - what would you like made? I don’t know if that shade of yellow would make the best shirt for you,” Moira said, giving the mustard yellow curtains an ill-disguised look of contempt.

“I was thinking of play clothes, for the children,” Charles said quietly. Moira looked at him for a moment, then looked once against to the curtains. A small smile began to form on her face.
“Of course. I won’t mention it to Er - the captain. He’s run such a tight ship since Magda passed away that the children haven’t had any time to be children. Perhaps we can discuss the clothes over dinner? I eat separately from the family these days and it would be nice to have company.”
Moira’s last sentence stuck in Charles’ mind; he was glad to hear Moira’s overture of friendship, especially since she raised so many questions. Maybe I can find out where her accent is from. It’s maddening that I can’t place it.
“Oh, of course. What time?”
“Seven thirty. I’ll come get you; it can be hard to find your way around this place at first,” Moira said as she walked away.
Charles was left looking at his room. He placed his suitcase on the dresser and began to unpack. He put the few clothes he owned in the dresser, and all his favourite books on the bookshelf - with the exception of the book he was currently working his way through, which he placed on his night table. He then went to his desk and began writing study plans for his students.

Is Charles going to teach them to sing? Will Erik call Charles Captain? Who is the Baroness? I'm tuning in, for always!

Oh, and did I mention that was got me through my long boring shift at work was imagining Charles on the way to the Lensherrs' skipping and signing the confidence song? :P I had it stuck in my head all day. Can James McAvoy even sing at all? I just realized I have no idea...
