When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren

Tweaking the timeline on this one a little

"Oh, come on, Charlotte," Raven complains, tugging her sister off the train and onto the platform. "You need a weekend away from those books. Seriously, your brain is going to melt if you keep this up. School hasn't even started yet."

"Perhaps not, but I have a thousand and one things to do before start of term, Raven, and not a one of them's going to get done if I'm galivanting about Europe!"

Raven rolls her eyes, persistently tugging Charlotte through the crowd, using her bag to push people aside. "A weekend in Paris doesn't count as 'galivanting', Charlotte. God, you are such an old woman. We're supposed to be teenagers, Oxford bound or not, and that means galivanting every chance we get."

Nearly tripping over a child chasing a ball, his thoughts rapid-fire French and filled with glee which promised nothing good for the exasperated nanny on his heels, Charlotte frowns at the back of her sister's head. They're hardly teenagers, really, chronology counting for little against experience. Lord knows, she'd never really managed to think of herself as either a child or a teenager. Her abilities had started that process and--she breaks off the thought before the image of Cain standing over a terrified Raven can truly form in her mind's eye. Those are days she does not need to dwell on.

Breathing deep, she pushes the thoughts from her mind and draws from the chaos around her. It's exasperated, excited, and a thousand things which do not involve abusive stepbrothers or money-grubbing stepfathers. Filling her thoughts with it, she stops and digs her feet in, forcing Raven to turn around and face her.

"All right," she says, giving in with a smile. "You realize, though, we can hardly have a dirty weekend away with each other."

Raven makes a face. "God, no. I love you, Charlotte, but sex is not supposed to send a girl into a coma."

Charlotte closes her eyes. "Raven."

She's expecting it, but Raven's laughter still warms her to the core as always. "You are such a prude, Charlotte." Tipping forward on her boots, Raven lowers her voice. "Newsflash, I am so not a virgin."

"And I do not need to hear that!" Charlotte protests.

For her troubles, she gets a smacking kiss on her forehead and Raven hugging her tight. "Totally square, but don't ever change, okay?" Pulling back, Raven looks at her. "How about we make a deal? For one weekend, we'll be anybody but Charlotte and Raven. Just ordinary girls having a Paris weekend and chasing every hot French boy in sight, okay?"

"Anybody but?" Charlotte narrows her eyes. "Why do I feel a--"

"--bet coming on? Because you do." Raven cocks a hip, putting her hand on it, her body shimmering quickly into that of an older redhead. Pursing her lips, now painted a brilliant red, Raven holds out a hand. "No powers, no real names, just us." She pauses, then shrugs. "Well, mostly no powers. You can't use your abilities and I have to hold this form all weekend, okay?"

"Terms?"

"I attend classes as you for a week. You can get in all the studying you want and not miss a minute's instruction time." Raven's expression says all Charlotte needs to know of her opinion on that. "And a serious shopping spree this spring."

It's utter lunacy to agree to the terms, but Charlotte finds herself nodding anyway. She'd empty the family coffers if it put a smile on Raven's face every day and, really, the week's class time did sound deliciously attractive. "I reserve the right to select the week, yes?"

"Absolutely," Raven says, her smile unchanged by her form-shift. "Now, we're going to need new names." Seizing Charlotte's hand again, she starts through the crowd, looking this way and that until her smile widens and she smirks her sister's way.

"Magda? You must be joking."

"Not even a little bit and stop that. Magda isn't a mutant, remember? No telepathy. On your honour and all that, okay?"

Scrunching her nose, Charlotte nods. "Okay."

Right, Magda the non-mutant, she can do this. Really. Taking a deep breath, she shrouds her mind and follows Raven into the crowd.

This will not end well.
