Day 0: Let’s find out
They join hands, a line of mutants facing against their own kind, their backs to the humans. The helmet feels strange and heavy on his head and there’s still blood on his fingers. The children stare back at him, defiant, stricken, young.
Erik stops himself from looking down at the sprawled figure of Charles, panting in pain, his head cradled in Moira’s lap. He definitely doesn’t look at his friend’s hands twitching helplessly in the sand.
And he most assuredly doesn’t clench his jaw because Charles is looking at Raven with love shining in his eyes.
He tightens his grip on Raven’s gloved hand until she makes a small noise. Erik turns his head and nods sharply at Azazel. The other mutant takes the nod as the order it is.
Wisps of red-tinged cloud surround them and they are pulled from existence.
Day 1: I can do this.
‘Are you ready for this?’
It’s Charles. He’s standing across from him and there’s no sense of betrayal on his face. There’s no helmet on his head. Erik’s gripping the handle of the Blackbird, not Raven’s hand. He flicks his head around. They’re all here, the kids are strapped in and Sean is floating in the ocean below them.
And Shaw is still alive. There, below them.
‘Erik.’ Charles grips his shoulder, the leather protests at the movement. ‘Are you ready?’
With complete confidence, Erik nods firmly. ‘I can do this.’
Charles smiles, bright and easy and tells Hank to lower the landing gear.
I should not be doing this right now! I have an exam in two hours! AHH!

So looking forward to more of this (though I may avoid reading it for a bit so I don't accidentally parrot your stuff, haha), and good luck with your exam!

Ah yes, fandom is fandom and cliche's have to be written. :D
Sorry if it seems like I stole some of your ideas, I swear I had them buzzing around in my head beforehand, but I'll try to deviate as much as possible!
