an: the man wanted cuddle tiem. and to go see it in theaters with me because i snuck off and watched it without him before. so i'm sorry for the wait, dear. but fwiw, this fill’s been outlined and will have a few more parts and, uh, if it’s not obvious yet, it’ll end up an au. but not exactly an au. even while indeed being an au.

-

Erik wants to sleep, to dream of his mother and what she needs, needs sleep for tomorrow.

Instead, there’s only a slow simmer in the back of his mind, Shaw’s voice cutting through his mother’s lulling hum, refusing to give Erik even this peace, even so far away.

And:

Charles slipping through his thoughts with soft eyes that Erik cannot dismiss the way he had so easily dismissed the hint of a smile that Charles refuses to be seen without.

The false one that Erik can see so easily through, what can only be naivety painfully obvious.

Erik shifts beneath the sheets, closes his eyes again only to open them to the dark of the room.

Tries again a minute and a half later.

Breathes out through his nose, flexes his fingers into the sheets on either side of him- and smells paper and ink, and warm skin despite the two showers he’d taken since earlier specifically to erase the scent (this method has yet to work).

His thoughts still for a moment, quiet, and he breathes again.

Tries to crush down the rush of humiliation as he remembers arms curving around his form, cradling, reassuring, Charles flooding his mind like Erik’s had been created to surround it. Charles is a stubbornly pure man, infuriatingly clear-eyed and secure, and even as Erik struggles to squash the thoughts, they multiply, surge to fill him.

Cringes inwardly as Charles’ new presence sweeps through the splintered corners of him, overtakes not just the shadows but everything Erik had hidden from them so many years before.

The brilliance of this new… something blinds even the fragmented memories of his mother, is in danger of obliterating even her, even after Charles had given her back today-

A footstep.

Nauseous with shame, infuriated by the instant realization that he had ignored the door being opened in favor of thoughts, he jolts out of a daze and half out of bed with a twist in his chest. Is left to blink and stare hard into the dark as metal shivers through the walls, as Erik straightens forcefully (does not hunch to hide behind the bed even as his back aches to curl inward) and holds his ground and tries not to feel like Erik.

“I didn’t invite you into my room.” (He invites no one into his room.) His voice is too rough, betrays him despite years of learning not to do just this.

“He does love me.”

Raven stares at him, eyes startlingly bright even to Erik in the dark, and he feels a moment of dread at the sight of her, aware suddenly of the power of her.

Rattled already, Erik straightens the last bit, forces bent metal to calm because he cannot be so, not him, not yet, not until it’s done-

“I know it. Doesn't make it better but he does.”

“Raven-”

The tilt of her head, consideration of things he remembers too clearly himself and then: “You’re just as annoying as he is, just as stubborn.” What? “Walking the opposite way but hitting the same wall.” Anger banked by pure confusion, by fear only now unclenching in his chest (because the house smells like Charles and food and warmth and what he knows somehow that other body would feel like tangled with his through the night), Erik waits. “Ask him about Lawrence when this is over,” she says after a curious heartbeat, and turns away, opens the door, slips out.

Vanishes.

Leaves him alone in the dark.

Anoning is acting weird. I couldn't see this or the second part from the prompt comment until I logged in. Stupid LJ.

Anyway! Wow, great part! I'm in love with Erik's need and fear of Charles, and Raven...poor Raven, trying to help her boys as best as she can. Thanks for posting!

Continuing to be fascinated by this. It makes so much sense to me that Charles couldn't really be so naive as he sometimes appears -- as Erik thinks him -- because he *does* hear/feel people's thoughts and there are a lot of bastards out there, and a lot of bastardry.
This is extremely effective; definitely wish to read more.

Watching this. What a lovely, powerful premise. You don't get to be on the way of being the world's most powerful telepath without killing a few things, and the quaver in his voice? Sounded like someone who was remembering such an experience.
