Charles wants to sleep. He's tired. His eyes hurt. Everything hurts. His eyes, his head, his back, his brain. His mental blocks are down, and he's getting a rather constant flood of thought noise pounding on his skull. Except for the rather unsettling lack of thought that occasionally comes near him.
But he can't do that, because every time he starts to drift into oblivion, the Voice wakes him up. The Voice that seems to crawl out of emptiness, out of No Thought. "Wake up, telepath," the voice says. "We have work to do."
He swallows. His tongue tastes like blood. "Sleeping." Even that one word takes more energy than he has, and he starts to drift off again.
"If you'll just tell me your name," the Voice says, with a poke at his bruised back for good measure. "I'll let you sleep."
What is his name? He can't remember--his brain is too loud and he can't remember. Does he have a name? Who is he?
"Professor X," he mumbles. That's not his name, he knows that's not his name, but that's the only name he can remember. Maybe it is right. Maybe it will be enough, and the Voice will let him sink into painless oblivion.
"Sorry, Professor," the Voice says. "But that's just not quite good enough."
