Erik was actually grateful for the stranger's presence after that. Wanda after a fight with her Papa was always more willful and a pouty brat, sometimes for days. But within minutes the English gentlemen - Erik hadn't missed the slight accent nor the lack of work calluses on his hand when they'd shook - had charmed his daughter back to good spirits by introducing himself as Charles Darkholme and patiently answering any questions she had. Erik's daughter was a good interrogator.
Darkholme was 25 (young to have finished his thesis Erik thought) and everyone should call him Charles. He had a sister who he loved very much. She was studying to be an actress in London so she couldn't come with him on his travels. Yes, he did miss her very much but she was happy there. No, Charles didn't have a Papa. Or a Mama. (Privately he thought Blue Eyes-Charles did an excellent job not looking at Erik when Wanda patted Charles on the hand and told him it was ok, she didn't have a Mama either but Papa took care of everyone.) Yes, Charles loved ice cream but he didn't know how to make it. He did like cooking but had to be careful not to bring a book or he'd burn something. That turned into an elaborate story with hand gestures that made Armando chuckle and Erik almost crack a grin. Wanda was in stitches for the whole thing.
They reached the front gate shortly after that. Erik watched Charles carefully for his reaction while Armando hopped out to open the gate for the car to slip through. There was a low whistle but the question, “Is this yours?” was directed at Wanda.
“Yes! It's very big and much better than the apartment we were in even if Pietro says he doesn't remember it I do and it was smelly. I like my room here cause I get my own cause I'm a girl-”
“It's rented actually,” Erik cut his daughter off before she could launch into another rabble or mention Angel's underwear. “But still ours.” The smile was meant for Wanda as he reached over and ruffled her hair. When he looked back at Charles those blue eyes were on him again and he found his smile reflected back at him.
“I'd like to see it. If you don't mind.”
Erik thought he'd very much like to show this man his home. Then mentally kicked himself as Armando climbed back inside. “I need to check on the kids and solve any trouble they've gotten into while we were gone. Then we'll see if we can get you to your car and fix it. Until then I ask you stay with myself or Darwin. And please do not speak to any of the children unless they speak first.” He desperately hoped there would be no fires this time and Alex had managed to keep the other kids in one piece.
Erik watched the smile fade off Blu-Charles's face and the other man nodded solemnly. “Of course, Mr. Lehnsherr.”
“If you're going to butcher my last name you might as well call me Erik.”
