Charles waves goodbye just as Scott is given his necessary dose of medicine and finds himself holding back a laugh all the way down the hall, remembering the face the other boy makes. “Feel better!” he calls.
The Grand Staircase still catches Charles off guard, however, and the normal route back toward the Ravenclaw common rooms is redirected toward the library. Charles waits a few seconds for the staircase to sort itself out again, but when no movement comes, he resigns himself to finding another way around. The library is obviously a dead end, so Charles takes the opposite direction.
At the next corner, angry, hushed voices stop him in his track.
“You did this, didn't you?” the lower voice hisses. “I knew you were no good. You're tainting this school just by being here, stupid boy.”
Charles presses himself deftly against the closest wall, peeking around the edge in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the action.
“I did nothing.”
Charles frowns; he knows this voice.
It's Erik's.
The elder boy retaliates to the denial by jabbing his wand into Erik's temple. “Listen here. I am not one to be messed with. I'd watch your back from here on out if I were you.” Erik is pushed unceremoniously against the wall once more before Charles hears the telltale thud of footsteps. His heart seems to stop with fear. He rifles through his memories, trying to remember the Disillusionment Charm Flitwick had briefly mentioned in class a few days back.
Squeezing his eyes shut, he taps the bridge of his nose with his own wand. There is a distinct feeling of something dripping and wet sliding down the back of his neck, but before he even has time to wonder if this is supposed to happen, the footsteps round the corner. The other boy nearly runs into Charles, but by some miracle bypasses him by an inch.
Charles doesn't even dare to breathe until he can no longer see the other boy. He hears Erik breathing shakily and before he can think properly, Charles is bursting around the bend and jumping to Erik's side.
“Erik,” he says, voice almost too loud in such an empty expanse of hallway. “What happened? What was that other boy talking about back there? Are you in trouble?”
Erik jumps at Charles' voice and swings an arm blindly, smacking Charles in the jaw. “Who are you,” Erik asks, eyes darting wildly. His voice is steady and accusing, but the shaking in his right hand gives his fear away. His knuckles turn white as he grips his wand.
“It's me, Charles. Charles Xavier.” Charles gently lays his hand on Erik's shoulder, but Erik jerks away immediately. “Look, I know you probably can't see me right now - I had to cast an invisibility charm on myself when that boy got too close - but we were never taught how to get rid of it, so unfortunately you're going to have to trust me here. Just tell me what happened, okay?”
“I don't need your help,” Erik spits, still unsure as to where to keep his eyes. He glares at the ground instead. “I'm perfectly capable of handling my own problems, so don't go getting all high and mighty now.”
Charles sighs, massaging his forehead. “Just tell me what happened.”
Erik continues to glare, but Charles is nothing if not patient, so he waits it out. Eventually Erik takes in a deep breath and points down the hall at the nearest window. Lying at the base of it in a pool of blood is the caretaker's cat.
Charles stutters a bit, his head a mess of 'well fuck' and 'what happens now' and 'what if Erik really is what they all say he is,' before he leans forward, presses a hand to his cold, clammy forehead, and promptly vomits onto Erik's scuffed black shoes.

Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr and the chamber of love. Can we name it like this? (sorry just... something happens to the cat? I think of the chamber of secret)
