Grounds for Marriage (6/?) anonymous July 13 2011, 05:10:50 UTC
Feb. 4, 2011

"Surprise!"

Erik froze. He wasn't sure what he was looking at for a moment. Their rarely-used dining room table was covered in a white table cloth and lit with two candles. Charles, Hank, Raven, and Alex were all sitting at the table.Beside him, his mother was vibrating with excitement.

"Is this... Did you make me a sabbath dinner?"

Charles nodded proudly. "You didn't think I'd let your thirtieth birthday go by without doing something special, did you?"

"Well, no but this is..." There wasn't really a word for it. Erik hadn't had a good Shabbat meal in ages. Even his mother never had time to cook one.

"Raven had to bless the candles. I hope that's okay."

Erik nodded dumbly.

"Well, Erik," Edie prodded, "Would you like to say the Kiddush?"

"Of course." Erik walked to the head of the table and picked up the cup of wine. "Barukh atah Adonai Elohaynu, melekh ha'olam, borei p'ri ha'gafen."

Erik let the familiar words of the blessing carry him away. He could vaguely remember hearing his father say it, but most of his memories of Shabbats were of his mother's father. His grandfather had been a crotchety old rabbi who had been lucky enough to leave Germany before the Holocaust, and listening to him recite the Kiddush was like magic.

"That was beautiful, Erik," Charles said when Erik finished the blessings. "Thank you."

"I think I should be thanking you. You've outdone yourself, Charles."

Charles beamed. "I must admit that I did have help."

"He didn't have help with the cooking," Alex told him. "He kept swearing at us and telling us to get out of his kitchen."

"You'll get used to that," Erik said. "You've got how long before we have to ship you off to college?"

"College? Man, I can't afford college and there's not one in the world that would give me a scholarship."

"You don't need to afford college," Raven piped up, "Charles is a billionaire. Which reminds me, you're coming wedding dress shopping with me next weekend, brother mine. We're going to Kleinfeld and you're buying me something fancy."

Hank laughed, "I am so glad that the bride's family pays for the wedding."

"I can't say I'm enjoying it much," Charles sighed. "It'd be all right if you just let me write you a few blank checks, but no apparently since I'm paying I need to be involved."

"You're gay. I'm relying on your innate sense of style."

Erik snorted, "Innate sense of style? Have you met this man?"

"Oy, hark who's talking, turtleneck!"

"Woah, woah, woah!" Alex interrupted their bickering. "Billionaire?"

"Not really," Charles shook his head. "Raven likes to exaggerate. It is true that you needn't worry about affording college, though. We'd be willing to pay your tuition if you decided to go. And Raven, can't I just write you a check for the dress? I doubt I'll be much help with actually picking something out."

"You're coming. It's not up for discussion. Edie, do you want to come, too? I'm going to need some motherly advice."

"Oh, I would love to come!" Edie clapped her hands delightedly. "I adore that show. Do you think we'll get to meet Randy?"

"Show?" Alex repeated dumbly.

Raven and Edie started describing the show to him in detail while Charles, Erik, and Hank all rolled their eyes.

"I do wish you had decided to elope," Charles sighed. "Wedding planning is ridiculous."

"Oh, but you had so much fun planning this," Edie motioned at the table. "What's so different about a wedding?"

"This is a surprise party. All I had to do was cook a big meal and figure out a way to get Erik to come in and be surprised. Weddings have to be color-coordinated and you have to have flowers and invitations and a reception and a venue and a priest... And then you add to that the fact that I'm the bride's entire family so I have to make a toast, and threaten Hank's life, and learn to dance, and deal with melt-downs."

"You should try being the groom," Hank shuddered, "Not that I don't want to marry you, Raven, but I'd like to skip ahead to the spending the rest of our lives together."

"Should've been gay." Erik took Charles's hand in his and Charles nodded.

"Very convenient."

This is so cute. I really like the nickname 'turtleneck' for Erik.

"Hark who's talking" is INSPIRED.

I love how you're letting us learn a little bit more about Charles and Erik in very subtle ways. Also love the 'Say Yes to the Dress' reference. I can just imagine Raven, Edie, and Charles in Kleinfeld. Throw in Erik, and it'd be the BEST COMEDY EVER.

WAITING FOR MORE.

Authoranon is embarrassed to admit that she has no clue why "Hark who's talking" is inspired. It's just something that I say that sounded like Charles might say.

It's like you took sunshine and made it into something I can read. This makes me so ridiculously happy that I don't even know what to do with myself! It's been a little bit since your last update, and I desperately hope that there's more to come! This isn't to rush you, by the way. Take your time with the magic making.

This is utterly darling. I adore the day-to-day detail, the sense of building a life and a home and a family together, of time spent learning about each other, of misunderstandings and spats that don't do anything to diminish how much they are completely and totally in love. Can't wait to read more <3
Also *thump* Charles for denigrating Erik's turtlenecks. Erik is ridiculously fine and sexable in turtlenecks.
