Moira jumps a little when they come in and to be honest Charles can’t blame her. Most of this group she knows as CIA targets, Erik had tried to throttle her when they last met and although she won’t remember that the way the other mutant is glaring at her radiates hostility. And Charles himself has… not helped to sooth her nerves today.
He tells them what little he managed to glean from her in as neutral a manner as he can manage and explains his plan to complete and use Cerebro with Erik’s help. There is a short, loaded silence and then Emma asks with cool politeness “May I?” and reaches a hand out to Moira, who twitches back in her chair, the drink Charles had given her spilling a little over her hand. Emma’s smile is a little too delighted, her murmur of “Oh, don’t worry…” a shade too insincere to soothe.
Charles can feel it as she riffles through Moira’s head. It jitters along his skin like an itch and maybe that’s his problem with Emma. Maybe two telepaths can never be comfortable with each because they literally get on each others nerves. Maybe they’re too similar.
Or maybe he just doesn’t like the way Emma looks at other people like they’re mice to be played with.
He certainly doesn’t like it when Emma finishes checking out Moira and sits back to looks over at him with a gleam of near respect in her eyes and says “You didn’t go easy on her there, professor. I always imagined your approach would be more softly-softly.” Her mouth curves in a smile. “Less… brutal.”
Charles can’t help snapping back “I didn’t have time for niceties.” He glances at Moira, whose fingers are trembling as she knocks back her brandy and who won’t meet his eyes. He’s probably lost an ally there and he’s sorry for it and for the way he’s treated her, but that’s another thing he doesn’t have time for at the moment.
The others have all been quiet throughout this, and when Charles turns to look at them Erik is watching him with an expression Charles can’t decipher and Raven is looking at him as if she’s lost something, or is watching something be lost. One more thing to be shelved and dealt with later. For now, he meets Erik’s eyes and says “We need to get started on Cerebro.”
Erik gives him a nod and turns for the door. As Charles starts to follow Emma says delicately “And if your little booster chair for the brain doesn’t work and you can’t find them with it?”
He doesn’t look back, just pauses and says grimly “Then I work my way through the CIA, mind by mind, until I find someone who knows where they are.” He turns his head and smiles at her. It isn’t a pleasant smile. “But if I have to do it that way I’m going to be even more pissed off than I am already.”
As he passes through the doorway he hears Emma murmur behind him “Well. That’s not something I wish to see…” and strangely enough, this time there is no mocking in her voice at all.
