Charles had gone back to get all the information he could out of Moira after he spoke to Raven, but as he feared it wasn’t a great deal. What he’d done to her mind after Cuba had lost her more than some memories, it seemed. It had lost her status as well and she was now even further down the pecking order at the CIA than ever. It was remarkable that she had even got to hear about this man Stryker’s proposed ‘Mutant Assessment Programme’; there had never been any real chance her arguments against it would be listened to and she knew none of the details of the project’s base of operations or staff or even its real purpose.

So his best hope at the moment was getting Cerebro working. And for that he needed Erik.

He feels it the instant they arrived. Raven’s mind he knows closely and it slotted back into its place in his mindscape of the mansion like she’d never left. Angel’s head he knew a little, the odd feel of another telepathic mind was unmistakeably Emma Frost. He’d only touched Azazel and Riptide’s minds briefly but he recognises the feeling of hot coals and cool water.

Erik’s presence he felt only as a taunting absence in the middle of the other minds. The ache of a missing piece reached for only for his grasp to fall empty.

They’re in the entrance hall when he comes out from the main drawing room, measuring up the signs of damage all around. Raven’s crouched by the smear of Hank’s blood on the floor and when she notices Charles she leaps up and runs to him with a wordless cry of anguish, crashing into him with greater force than he’s braced for and making him stagger. It’s nearly more than his leg can handle but he makes himself hold steady and wraps his arms round her tightly as she burrows into his chest and, oh, but the feel of hugging his sister again is worth the momentary twinge his hip and thigh gives. The familiar strength of her; the smell of her hair as he presses his face into it.

He looks over the top of her head and sees Erik, who’s standing very still in the middle of the hall. The only movement he’s making is a slow clenching and unclenching of his fists and when his voice breaks the silence it’s harsh. “What happened to your leg?”

Raven pushes herself back and notices Charles’ cane for the first time and her face twists with fresh distress. “Charles!”

Charles strokes her hair and smiles at her “It’s alright, Raven. It’s nothing.”

Erik moves forward. “It’s ‘nothing’?! What happened, Charles? Did the CIA do this as well?”

Charles’ hand tightens on the handle of his cane and he fires back “I was shot in the back if you remember. You get some slight complications with a bullet wound near the spine!” Erik takes a sharp step back and Charles reins himself in, lets out a slow breath and adds “And it doesn’t matter right now. We have more important things concerning us.”

He turns back to the drawing room and motions for them to follow.
