David stared blankly at him for a few seconds after Charles finished his rather silly speech. Charles had almost given up hope for himself as a father when a tentative smile spread across the boy’s face.

“You’re mad,” the boy said wonderingly.

“Ah, but the only people worth bothering with are the mad ones,” Charles said playfully, “the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing*…certainly we could all do with a bit of madness, don’t you think?”

The boy’s smile widened. “I think I like you,” he said quietly.

“That’s good,” Charles said, “because I like you, too. I…” He stumbled over the words as he tried to say something properly significant at this momentous turning point in their lives. “I’m not your mom, David, and I won’t try to be, but I’m going to do my best for you. I promise.”

David looked at him with those wide blue-grey eyes and said, “Okay.”

Charles smiled in relief. Perhaps he wouldn’t be completely miserable at this fatherhood thing after all.

“Are we going now?” David asked, casting a surreptitious glance at the social worker who was still watching them like a hawk.

Charles nodded and held out a hand.

The boy hesitated only briefly before placing his tiny hand in Charles’.

And with his son’s hand held in his own, Charles was suddenly acutely aware that nothing would ever be the same. It was a terrifying thought, but as he looked down at his son, Charles knew that he had made the right choice. In fact, he had made the only choice.

Oh. My god. I want to take David home with me. And Charles. Because Charles is a shark magnet - I mean, it wouldn't do to separate the two now would it?

Aww this is adorable. I'm glad someones explore young father Charles (and not just of his adopted children either)because I could only image he would be not only the best father ever but also the most scariest. Can't wait for more!!

Thank you! I"m glad you're liking this. Poor Charles is horribly out of his depth, but he'll grow into the role...and yeah, he really does make a good father.
