To his son’s credit, the boy held up far better than some of the other children on the flight. A six month old baby spent most of the flight crying off and on and a toddler in the back of the plane was making quite a scene, much to her poor mother’s displeasure. David was an angel in comparison. All the same, Charles watched with trepidation as his son began to fidget in his seat, tugging on his seatbelt and petulantly kicking the seat in front of him.

Charles met the annoyed glare of the man sitting in front of David with an apologetic smile. He pulled out an apple and a sandwich he’d bought just before they got on the plane since the flight attendants wouldn’t be bringing food around for a little longer yet.

That distraction lasted almost a half hour.

Soon the man who had the misfortune of sitting in front of a bored four-year-old was back to glaring at Charles with a vengeance.

The telepath grimaced and rubbed tiredly at his temples. He could feel a headache coming on. He definitely wasn’t cut out for this.

Charles tried to convince David that he might want to try drawing again. The boy gave him a dark look and produced three pages of black and red scribbles that were a far cry from the very creative and detailed, if slightly morbid, drawings of monsters eating cars and stomping on houses (“Except for ours, because we have an even bigger one guarding us!” David had explained hours earlier with a proud smile) that his son had produced before.

Charles could tell that David’s spectacularly good behavior was fast running its course. On the spur of the moment, he decided to take David on a walk. A little exercise would be good for the boy, wouldn’t it?

“David, David! Come back here!” Charles found himself hissing moments later as his little hellion dashed up and down the aisle with uncontained joy. Charles had never seen his stoic son act so spirited. The boy was practically bursting with pent up energy.

Charles did his best to ignore the eyes of the other passengers. Some of them looked on in disapproval. Others were sympathetic and amused. Regardless, something about their scrutiny rankled. The telepath wondered how obvious his inexperience was to these strangers, but refrained from finding out. He didn’t want to know. A thought turned their eyes away and allowed him to concentrate on the only thing that mattered.
