"Bozo," Alex growls.
Hank's books are lying on the floor; Alex is rubbing at his shoulder.
Hank's glasses have fallen off. "I can't see," he says, but Alex isn't listening. When his fingers close around the frames: there is a crack going down the thick lenses.
"I'm sorry," he half-whispers -
- but Alex is gone.
There is something wrong with him.
There is something wrong with all of them, but there is something wrong with him.
"Big foot," the children tease as they circle him on the playground.
"Big foot," they laugh; "big foot, big foot".
He is lying on the asphalt and they have stolen his shoes.
(Sticks and stones might break my bones, but words will never hurt me, someone once said.
"Big foot," the children grin, and he can't breathe.)
He threw up in the sandpit, did you know? He told the teacher it was food poisoning.
Here, a hint: it wasn't.
"How about bigfoot?" Alex asks, and the others laugh.
He swallows.
Raven comes to his defense, and it should feel good but it doesn't, and he can feel bile rising at the back of his throat.
"Excuse me," he says politely.
He throws up in his bathroom, on his knees, and fingers clutching white porcelain.
He hasn't had this nightmare in years now.
(But, that night: he is on the playground, again.
"Bigfoot," someone says but this time it is not a boy with a sticky lollipop in one hand. It is Alex.
His mouth is hard.)
He smashes all of his glass beakers-
- and then his test-tubes; his pipettes; his flasks.
Alex is at the door, and there is blood on his hands, and Alex is at the door.
"Hank," he says. "What happened?"
There is silence.
"Hank," he says, and his voice sounds strange.
"You almost sound concerned," Hank laughs, bitter.
Alex is quiet, but then -
- "I am concerned," Alex snaps. "You idiot."
This is how it goes: Alex winds white bandages around his hands, and says, "I won't tell anyone, okay?"
He doesn't look at Hank in the eyes.
But, later: "I'm sorry," he half-whispers, in Hank's bedroom.
Hank has drawn his blankets around him and Alex is sitting on his carpet, chin resting on knees.
Hank doesn't respond -
- but in the middle of the night, when he wakes up and Alex is asleep on his carpet, he tugs the boy onto his bed and sleeps on the floor himself.
(On the playground, the children are dancing around Hank.
"Big foot," they are laughing. Then, there is someone pushing through the crowd and offering a hand.
"Come on," they say in their familiar voice -
- and Hank, he takes their hand.)
OP and anyone else who read this: I know it's short and probably not what you were looking for, but I hope you liked it regardless?

You say you haven't seen the film yet? I really, really commend you for getting the tone and everything spot on. As someone who was verbally abused for many years at School for being different, I just want to tell you that this is amazing, and all I want to do is to hug Hank and never ever let go because this is now my head!canon and this was a beautiful fill, anon. Really, all my internet love.

And I'm sorry about your experience with bullying in school. I know how cruel kids can be and I'm sorry you had to go through that. I've never been verbally bullied, not really; they've never said anything to me. But that's the thing, they never said anything to me at all, and just made me feel like an outsider. (Apparently sharing your life story over the Internet is in these days, lol.)

Been there, done that-- both sides, oddly enough. The well-meaning kind, from me, of course, because I know how much it sucks when it's intentional, but basically this happened and I felt like the biggest dick on the planet :/
