FILL: Charles/Erik, Healing - Just another phase of finding (4a/5) anonymous June 16 2011, 13:11:47 UTC
__

They needed a car. Erik led them out back to the lot where they’d have their pick. Voices rose behind them as the officers began to overcome their shock and fear enough to question what was keeping them suspended, even if they were ignorant of the source.

The back doors were locked, but doors were never a problem. They exploded outward in a truly spectacular display of showering debris. He had to admit he had a growing fondness for making entrances, and exits.

“Take your pick,” he said, gesturing to Theo casually, as if they had all the time in -

There was a gunshot, a scream (- he couldn’t even turn to see -). Then a sudden, sharp pain.

He felt the loss of Theo’s warm hand in his, and he thought he heard a man shout, but he couldn’t be sure beneath the haze of his disbelief.

You see, Charles, Eric thought distantly, I did need the practice after all.

__

Again, there was blood. Erik regained consciousness to its taste, the smell, the slick feel of it spreading over his palm. His breaths came in short, labored bursts, so he focused on each one until they came more evenly. He was used to this, to pain and blood. But he thought he’d been past it in some respects.

He suddenly felt pressure being applied to his shoulder over his own hand, urging him to lie down. When he looked for the source, Theo was there trying to staunch the bloody flow, which looked like spilt ink in the single lamp’s glow. Light formed beneath Theo’s hands.

Erik’s head rolled to the side. He realized they were still in the lot. The pavement beneath him was cold, wet. If he measured how much of his blood had been spilled in his life, he wondered -

The sound of footsteps and yells brought him back. He must have been out for the briefest of moments, just enough time to have lost his hold on the authorities to the front of the hotel, enough for them to regain their courage and give chase.

Despite the pain and Theo’s small sound of protest, Erik threw out his free fist, once more locking metal fastenings, weapons, vehicles, and every scrap bit of metal this time, in his power.

“We have to go,” he said. It fucking hurt to talk, let alone move, but he forced himself to a stand.

He pushed at Theo’s hands and needed to use more force than he thought would ever be necessary to dislodge a child’s hold. It could have been from the light still pouring from Theo’s palms. It could have been the blood loss making him weak.

He shook his head to clear it and led the way toward the first nondescript car he came across. Black was always a good color.

He found he had to step over someone lying face-down on the pavement. There was no outward indication of harm, but the uniformed man did not move. When he glanced at Theo, the boy was inching hesitantly around the prone body to the car farthest from it.

Blue would do as well, Erik thought, and followed.

__

For a while, the pain of his wound didn’t register as he concentrated on preventing others in the immediate area from following in their own vehicles.

He allowed himself to relax only when they were well enough on the road.

The car they’d stolen wasn’t fancy. It smelled like new leather for all that the material was lightly cracked.

Erik eased into his seat, lightly pressing two fingers to the wound on his shoulder. He felt only a slight pain now. There was no longer a deep puncture beneath the hole in his shirt, just a jagged circle of hard, raised tissue.

In the passenger seat, Theo sat hunched over to his right. He was quiet. Somehow in the madness, he had found the time to grab his knapsack, and there he sat clutching it tightly to his chest with his left arm. His knees were drawn up in a frail parody of a barrier around it as well.

Leaning heavily against the door, the boy squinted at the darkened road unfolding from the darkness before them.

Sometimes, Erik envied Charles his gift of knowing the thoughts occupying others’ minds.

OP says: As fab as previously! I already said it, but I just want to say again how much I love Erik in this, and how I can totally imagine all of it, he is just like the actual character. If your Charles is as good, I can die happy!

And I like the plot vry much as well, btw :)

I apologize for being MIA of late! I will be updating soon, though! These sorts of memes are not healthy, because I tend to want to fill numerous prompts and have these WIPs hanging over me.

I believe, at this point, that this story will actually be in two separate installments, and the next will have quite a bit more of Charles, so we shall see how that goes :) I'm so pleased you're enjoying this so far. Thanks for the encouragement!

I've just recently seen the film, and am now diving headfirst into a new fandom, though I really don't have the time...

This is one of the first fics I've read in the meme (and the fandom overall), and if even any of the other fics even begin to approach the amazingness of this one, I'll be in for a long, pleasant stay :)

I understand completely how you feel about diving into the new fandom! I hadn't meant to write, but this meme is so busy and fun. :) Glad you could join in!

I'm flattered this fic is one of your firsts, so to speak, and I'm so glad you're enjoying it so far. Thanks for the lovely note!
