I really liked Dragon Age. It's the game that convinced me it was worth bothering with the genre and not just sticking to top down strategy and Civ. The problem I had with it was insufficient variety in the combats but KOTOR seems just as bad in that department at the moment, though I'm still at the start of the game.

In addition KOTORs interface is annoying (though I guess I have to forgive it its age) and the fact they used Star Wars d20 for the system has resulted in many rants. My standard action in pretty much every combat so far is switch to Carth so I keep him using power shot and not default attacking like a muppet. Trying to use the whole party together requires pausing every round to reset all their actions. Being d20 there is always one optimal attack to use so why can't I just lock them to alway use that instead of having to keep clicking round. Probably this problem will go away slightly when I have Jedi, whose powers are more situational. I much prefer the Dragon Age programable AI.

For Dragon Age I finished the game by finding some ways to exploit the monster AI, which made it much less immersive. I'm torn between re-playing it at high difficulty to make me have to think carefully about tactics or low difficulty so I don't worry about needing to use these exploits and bugs to survive.

From what I've seen the Mass Effect games are basically movies where you can choose to be John Mclain or Picard. The combat looked quite same-y throughout but hopefully it will be interesting enough.

I had heard that: light attack, heavy attack, block etc.

We'll see how quickly I resort to button mashing...
