It's strange how little any of the Saiyuki stories have to do with the actual historical figure. After all, he was from the 5th century. At least it is true that Zen originated in China, even if the canon has a lot of mixed traditions.

Sanzo's forceful side is certainly more apparent. Some people over-do it while others under-do it. Particularly with 353, I've seen a lot of people under-do it in order to make Sanzo more tolerable of Gojyo, which disgusts me. On the other hand, there's no sense in over-doing it to make him senselessly violent. I think Gojyo gets enough torment already. Really, I just want a bit of mind-play, and perhaps a representation of how they misunderstand each other at times.

Saiyuki is definitely a lot more complex than any other manga I've heard about. I've always felt that I understand Sanzo and his interactions with others a bit too well, but my opinion doesn't match with everyone's.

The feelings come easily to me. Well, that's really a terrible understatement. Most people find it difficult to put themselves in Sanzo's shoes. I find it difficult not to.
