Hayner x Olette- 1 sentence challenge, theme set Gamma

#01- Ring
He first met her out on the playground, where Seifer and his gang had formed a menacing circle around her, taunting her, and he yelled loudly at them to stop, and then, after they'd left, she'd looked at him with adoring green eyes, and he was smitten.

#02- Hero
After they started hanging out with Pence, the three of them would make up elaborate stories during recess of dragons and magic, and Olette would always want to be a warrior princess or a mage, and Hayner always wished that she would be a damsel instead, so he could rescue her.

#03- Memory
The summer between their fourth and fifth grades she had gone away to camp, and before she'd left she'd given him her favorite pencil (which was orange) and told him to keep it safe for her, and he'd never told her that he still kept it in his bedside table so he could do just that.

#04- Box
The art teacher gave them the assignment to design a memory box, and they spent a whole week on it, decorating the outside with pictures and drawings and popsicle sticks, and then they all took turns putting objects inside it, and Hayner was glad that it was theirs, because it meant that they were important to each other.

#05- Run
There had been something in the basement of the old, deserted mansion and it had scared them all half to death the first time they had gone inside, and before they knew it they were running out of the building as fast as they could, and he was holding her hand to make sure she didn't trip and fall.

#06- Hurricane
There weren't many storms in Twilight Town, but one summer there had been an awful typhoon, and she had cried when they went to the beach afterwards and found all the bodies of the dead fish lying on the sand, so he helped her dig holes in the dunes to bury them.

#07- Wings
They started to get too old for Halloween, but they went out and got costumes anyway, and they ended up missing most of the candy gathering because of the furious game of war that had started after he stole her fairy wings and she bopped him on the nose with her sparkling wand.

#08- Cold
Hayner hated winter, but Pence loved the snow, and so they all trudged out into the white banks to make snowmen, creating three that stood side by sides with their branch-hands touching that they named after themselves, and afterwards, when they were standing back to admire their work, Hayner thought she looked beautiful with the flush on her cheeks from the icy wind.

#09- Red
She'd been alarmed the first time they took a test in middle school and Hayner's came back with large red x's all over it, and it started a trend where she would sit with him during study hall in the library and help him with his multiplication tables, and sometimes he got them wrong on purpose just to get her to stay longer.

#10- Drink
He hadn't been able to help himself when Seifer said something nasty about her during lunch one day, so he'd thrown his milk carton at the other boy, which had started a fight, and then they both ended up in detention, and later, when she asked him about it, he couldn't come up with a good excuse for why he'd done something so stupid.

#11- Midnight
Pence's mother had said something about seeing ghosts at midnight, and so they went out with nothing but a lantern to light their way, and when a cat had jumped out from behind a trash can Olette had shrieked in terror and cowered behind him, and he liked, more than he was willing to admit, the way her fingers had clamped down around his arm.

#12- Temptation
There was something insanely alluring about blowing all of his allowance on sea salt ice cream during the summer, mostly because he liked the way she would eat hers so slowly that it would melt, and then she would lick her fingers when the treat began to run down her hands.

#13- View
It took a lot of planning, but he and Pence finally managed to get her to take the train ride across to the other side of town, and then they surprised her with cupcakes as they sat on Sunset Hill and celebrated her birthday, watching the sunset streak the sky with colors.

#14- Music
For awhile Hayner was convinced that he wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but Olette had just laughed at him and told him that he didn't have the patience to teach himself, and she was right, even though he spent hours laboring over the strings with blisters on his fingers, wishing that he could play well enough to write her a song.

#15- Silk
One summer, they spent nearly all of their time down at the beach, and on warm afternoons they would lay under a shady tree and nap, and he liked it when she would fall asleep next to him, because her hair would dry in curls around her head, and when he ran his fingers through it (when the others were asleep, of course), he thought it was the softest thing he'd ever felt.

#16- Cover
A few times she seemed to catch on to what he was doing, and she would give him a strange, unreadable look, and he would try and quickly cover his tracks by saying something mean so she would just think that he was grumpy and look away.

#17- Promise
Before the start of seventh grade, they thought they were going to get split up in classes, and so the three of them made a promise to always sit at the same table at lunch, and they swore on it by standing with their hands in a knot in front of them, each holding one of the other's hands, and Hayner wished he didn't have to let go of hers afterward.

#18- Dream
They went camping with her parents, and the three kids shared a big blue tent, and Olette woke up in the middle of the night crying and shaking because of a nightmare about bears, and he couldn't think of anything else to do except hug her, secretly glad that Pence was such a heavy sleeper.

#19- Candle
Hayner wasn't very good about homework, and there were a few nights where he would climb up the tree outside her bedroom and knock on her window, and they would sit up by candlelight as she helped him finish his assignment, whispering with their heads together, bent over the paper.

#20- Talent
Olette yelled at him with tears in her eyes after he came back from the first Struggle against Seifer, sporting a black eye and a fat lip, and when he told her that he did it because he wanted to be better than Seifer, she got strangely quiet and said that he already was better then Seifer.

#21- Silence
There were times that they would sit on top of the tower, watching the ocean ripple on the horizon, and Hayner was afraid that if he said anything, he would break the moment, and so he would just sit there, biting his tongue, until the last remnants of day had disappeared into the night.

#22- Journey
They would always talk about taking a trip, like in the movies, off to discover far away worlds, but when it came down to actually leaving Pence would change his mind and want to go swimming instead, and Olette would look at Hayner and smile a little, and then they would put it off until another day.

#23- Fire
Usually she wouldn't raise her voice, but one time Hayner went to far in making fun of Pence, and she glared at him with her eyes blazing, and he had never felt quite so afraid that she would cease being his friend, so the next day he bought Pence a new comic book by way of an apology.

#24- Strength
She had told him that it was a bad idea to explore the old sewers, but he wanted to try and find some buried treasure so they went anyway, and when part of the roof collapsed and a beam fell on her leg, he panicked and threw it off of her, and through her tears she told him that he was the strongest boy she'd ever known.

#25- Mask
After awhile he got paranoid that everyone knew how he felt about her, so he started to be mean in hopes that it would disguise it, and when she went off shopping with Pence instead of him, he sulked in the Usual Spot until they came back, feeling like an idiot.

#26- Ice
When the wind got cold and the lake thirty miles in-land froze over, he took her ice-skating alone, and she laughed as she spun around on the frozen surface and then fell, and she was still giggling when she pushed him into a snowbank just off the side.

#27- Fall
One of his favorite memories was the time they spent two hours raking all the leaves in her backyard and formed them into large piles, and then they took turns diving into the piles and laughing as the leaves shot into the air and fell around them like fluttering orange raindrops.

#28- Forgotten
Before they started eighth grade, Olette's grandmother died, and her parents took her for most of the summer to be with the rest of their family, and Hayner was terrified that she would change in the time she was gone; he was glad when she finally came back and skipped over to the Usual Spot where he and Pence were waiting with a smile on her face, like she hadn't been gone at all.

#29- Dance
Middle school heralded the arrival of school dances; silly functions where the girls and boys stayed on separate sides, and he really wanted to ask her to dance, because she looked beautiful in the dim lighting, but he couldn't work up the nerve.

#30- Body
It was right around the end of eighth grade that he realized he wasn't the only person taking a notice in her, because somewhere between sticky fingers and recess she'd grown into a very pretty girl, and suddenly he was surrounded by competition for her affection.

#31- Sacred
She never brought anyone to the Usual Spot save the one time that a girl with blonde hair and braids tied with ribbons had followed her out, and Olette had gotten so mad that she'd yelled at the girl and told her that it was "their" spot only, and Hayner had felt a great rush of adoration towards her.

#32- Farewells
He hated saying goodnight after the sun went down and the sky was streaked with vivid colors, because he always wanted to kiss her and instead he would just wave and run off, and she would turn the corner towards her house, and then he would curse himself again for being such a coward.

#33- World
In English class, the teacher assigned them to write about what the most important thing to them was; Pence was scribbling away at his paper about superhero comic books, and Olette was bent over her essay on her parents, and all Hayner could think about was how he really wanted to write an entire assignment on how important Olette was to him.

#34- Formal
High school was different, because high school was the end; it marked the end of their nights open after classes were over, because suddenly they were doing homework every night instead, and Hayner had to come up with new reasons to keep her close.

#35- Fever
In autumn, right near the time when the leaves all turned orange and brown, Hayner got the flu and was stuck in bed for a week, and Olette came by every night with his schoolbooks and assignments, and as she sat next to his bed explaining them, Hayner thought that maybe being sick wasn't quite that bad after all.

#36- Laugh
They went up to Sunset Hill one Friday night to watch the sunset and eat sea salt ice cream and laugh amongst themselves, and as they'd all sat there side by side, watching the pink hues streak the sky, Hayner had finally managed to move his fingers so that they were lightly touching hers, and she hadn't seemed startled or alarmed; in fact, she hadn't even looked at him, she'd just moved her hand so that one of her fingers was gently interlaced with his.

#37- Lies
Olette's friend with the blonde braids had cornered him at school, in the lunch hall, and asked him if he'd like to go to a movie; he'd said no, and, upon seeing her crushed face, had told her that he just didn't have the time to go out with all of his homework, rather than admitting that there was someone else he liked instead.

#38- Forever
Pence asked them one day, while they were sitting in the Usual Spot, if they would always be friends because he was worried, and Olette had giggled and said they would be friends forever, only she hadn't looked at Pence when she said it, she'd looked straight at Hayner, her expression unreadable.

#39- Overwhelmed
Finals snuck up on all of them, and Olette sat on the top of the stack of crates, crying quietly into her hand, so Hayner put an awkward hand on her shoulder, hoping to help; she leaned into his touch so that her cheek was almost touching his shoulder, and they stayed like that until her cries stopped.

#40- Whisper
They ran into Seifer's gang less and less, but once when they did, Olette leaned in closer to Hayner and whispered in his ear that she saw Seifer's marks on his last test, and his grades were the reason that his parents wouldn't let him out much anymore, and her breath had tickled Hayner's ear in a decidedly pleasant manner.

#41- Wait
They spent more time at the beach and less time at the Usual Spot reading comics, and as they trudged back towards the train station at the end of the day, Hayner fell in step next to her, and, deciding that he simply couldn't afford to wait any longer, he let his fingers brush against hers, and was blown away when she curled her hand around his, holding it the entire length of the walk back.

#42- Talk
They started doing their homework on her couch together, and she would sit so close that her shoulder would brush against his when she wrote; they didn't speak much, but he realized that they didn't have to, because he could tell when she was stuck by the way she chewed on the end of her pencil.

#43- Search
He began looking for things they could do that would afford them extra time together, and he could tell she was as well- she suggested seeing a movie in the old theater, and when they were inside, safely enclosed by the darkness, she had reached over and grabbed his hand, and they stayed like that through the entire film, with Pence sitting blissfully unaware on Hayner's other side.

#44- Hope
They decided to go and see if Old Henry had some chores for them to do, to make some extra cash, and Pence had bounded gleefully down the alley, but Olette had hung back; unsure if something was wrong, Hayner had turned to her to ask what was the matter, only she put both hands on his shoulder and pushed herself up on her tip-toes, her mouth brushing gently across his, and then she was gone, flushed and smiling, running after Pence.

#45- Eclipse
He walked her home a few nights later, their hands clasped between them, and when they reached her front walk Hayner stopped, turning towards her, and he leaned down to kiss her on the mouth, because he was determined to give her a real kiss; she wrapped her arms around his neck, and they stayed like that for a very long time in the moonlight.

#46- Gravity
It took awhile, but Pence started to notice how they would always gravitate towards each other when they were hanging out or doing homework, and he smirked at Hayner but didn't really say anything, and afterwards, when he was gone, Olette admitted that he'd suspected for a long time but couldn't find any proof.

#47- Highway
They went back to Sunset Hill again, only this time they walked, going slowly down the road with their hands tightly held together, and when they got there Hayner pulled her in and held her close to his chest, chin resting on her shoulder, as they watched the sun fall from the sky.

#48- Unknown
His heart was hammering in his chest as he buried his face in her hair, mumbling into the curls, and she'd stiffened and there was a tense moment of silence, and then she turned, touching his face with her hands, looking like she was about to laugh and cry at the same time, and said that she loved him, too.

#49- Lock
He got good at scaling the big oak tree outside her window and climbing in through the wooden pane, and she would always cross the room silently and the lock her bedroom door, so that her parents wouldn't walk in on them when they were breathless and flushed, lips swollen and red, lying together on her bed with their arms around each other.

#50- Breathe
He had to remind himself to keep breathing as she pulled him down on her, hands roaming, cries stifled (so as not to wake his mother), and then later, when they lay exhausted and exhilarated and aware that they were adults, he realized that he couldn't have imagined a better graduation night, because she was his, and he was hers, and that's the way it was supposed to be.
