Fandom: D. Gray-Man
Pairing: Allen Walker x Lenalee Lee (listed as Allen Walker and Linali Li, I changed my preferred romanization between claiming and writing....)
Theme set: Gamma
Rating:PG to R (these are teenagers, sexish stuff happens!)
Warnings: Vague sexish things, character death many times over, something of a lack of fluff, references to obscure canon details
Notes: Betaed by my dear Drave. With the exception of 12 and 13, these are based firmly on manga canon. 45 references a 1980s (and no, those numbers aren't transposed!) love song entitled "Total Eclipse of the Heart," thanks to my beta for pointing me towards it and getting that prompt unstuck.
#01 - Ring
In the ruins of Edo, Allen pulled a small box from the inside of his jacket and awkwardly handed it and a promise to Lenalee; very soon after she made getting married a necessity, and he was glad he'd managed to give her the ring before that inevitable night (as now Komui wouldn't be able to kill him quite so easily...).
#02 - Hero
It hit him like a thunderbolt (like that slap she'd landed on him back in Germany) that he didn't want to be a hero, because heroes were alone, and she was right to say that he didn't have to be any more.
#03 - Memory
"That's your father," Lenalee told a girl with sky-blue eyes, and taking the picture frame from small hands, she continued, "he was a very brave man, and very kind, and I do still miss him terribly."
#04 - Box
It couldn't be right, Lenalee thought, surely it was someone else's body they'd shipped back, there'd somehow been a mix-up and he was somewhere else, alive....
#05 - Run
There had been a rush of Science Team members past the cafeteria, a gurney in their midst--Allen dropped his fork and followed them at the realization that today was when Lenalee was supposed to have come home.
#06 - Hurricane
Even in an interior closet, the wind's roar was deafening; he knew she was telling him that it'd be all right even without hearing it, they were pressed that close.
#07 - Wings
She ruffled the feathers experimentally--"Honestly, if I'm dead, do I really need these? You've not got them!"--and took his hand, leaving her body behind.
#08 - Cold
"Don't kiss me, you'll get sick too!" Allen yelped, not able in any way to know that Lenalee had been the one who'd carried the virus in the first place, and in the end utterly unable to fend off her advances.
#09 - Red
"It's funny," she told him, stroking the curse-mark with a cool fingertip, "but where I come from this color's good luck."
#10 - Drink
It was winter when they first kissed, Allen remembers, and she'd given him much more than a taste of the sweet cider she'd been drinking; indeed, that was the very taste of sweet sin, the taste he recalled from that afternoon spent drinking more than he'd expected.
#11 - Midnight
"Happy October ninth," Allen whispers, rolling over in bed; Lenalee can't help but laugh at being woken up for that.
#12 - Temptation
There was nothing but a blanket between them; if he leaned over and peered to the side just right he'd be able to see her in a nightgown--instead, Allen clutched the blankets and tried to think of England.
#13 - View
They were sharing a hotel room, surely it couldn't be wrong to "accidentally" look up just as he was taking off his shirt?
#14 - Music
She'd grown accustomed to music of some kind or another, living at the Order, and while Komui's off-key humming could make her smile, the rare moments where she could listen to Allen's singing (unobserved and so not making his voice to crack with nervousness) aroused affections of an entirely different sort.
#15 - Silk
She was surprised at how soft his hair was, the first time she touched it; she'd never thought of that unruly mess of white as something like to silk.
#16 - Cover
"We're, uh... a young married couple. We eloped!" Allen yelped, Lenalee's foot crushing his own underneath the table.
#17 - Promise
"Yes, I'll have her back by nine-thirty, no, there won't be any of the sort of goings-on that happen between young couples in parks, no, I'm not going to act like Master Cross around her..." Allen stammered, voice growing more and more high-pitched from fear as Komui revved his drill; in the hallway Lenalee had collapsed to the floor, quivering with suppressed laughter.
#18 - Dream
"And after the war--come on, stay with me, 'lee, don't fall asleep now or you're prob'ly not going to wake up--we can..." he swallowed hard, there was so much blood and none of it was his this time, oh God, "...live together, wherever you want; I've got enough saved up from poker games to buy us a house...."
#19 - Candle
She dropped far more money than was necessary to light the entire rack of candles ablaze into the collection box, but only lit one--an attempt at bribing God, and a prayer that he'd be safe without her there.
#20 - Talent
"Do I even want to know where you learned to completely unlace a corset one-handed?" Lenalee demanded of a sheepish Allen.
#21 - Silence
He liked long train rides the most, because then they'd just sit after a while, not needing to talk.
#22 - Journey
"You might think it's honorable, that it's right, but for the love of God...you don't have to go it alone, Allen, not anymore!"
#23 - Fire
"God, don't stop... feels like I'm burning," she moaned; he wondered idly if he ought to tell her sometime that his left hand had, on occasion, started fires elsewhere....
#24 - Strength
"And you said love was a weakness," Lenalee said to Tiki Mick with a terrifying smile, her heel pressing his windpipe shut.
#25 - Mask
He might have had the Crowned Clown's face pulled over his own, but she knew him instantly.
#26 - Ice
"Move your feet!" she shrieked, and he blushed--it wasn't like they were made of ice or something, right?
#27 - Fall
'This is it, I'm really a goner this time,' he thought, watching the tower shrink away--and then her arms were around his waist and they were slowing down, though his heartbeat did just the opposite.
#28 - Forgotten
After the old man died, they buried him beside the tombstone he'd kept so scrupulously clean; within two months both monuments were covered in dead leaves, as forgotten as the war those beneath them had fought.
#29 - Dance
Lenalee was somewhere between aghast at and amused by Allen's sheepish declaration that he'd never learned to waltz--that night before the rewind she taught him, with Miranda clumsily playing piano.
#30 - Body
Lenalee honestly couldn't understand why Allen seemed so embarrassed to be seen even shirtless--his arm was strange, yes, but if you'd seen him fight it was so much more than a disfigurement.
#31 - Sacred
She kissed the cross on the back of his hand as though it were a relic--somehow that made Allen want to scream.
#32 - Farewells
"I promise you, I swear to you, I'll come back," Allen told her, blue eyes filled with fear and love, and she couldn't help but believe him.
#33 - World
There were times that Allen hated himself, and most of those involved forgetting his mission (his purpose) and thinking that she was more important.
#34 - Formal
Lenalee was a practical girl, opposed to wearing frivolous things such as silk dresses and corsets, but the slack-jawed incredulity on Allen's face very nearly made it all worthwhile.
#35 - Fever
"It might be a reaction to the blowdart," Komui had admitted sheepishly; Lenalee hadn't kicked him again, but rather stayed by Allen's side (like a dutiful little housewife, she thought wryly).
#36 - Laugh
"It wasn't me, I'm all right," Lenalee said, pulling Allen to his feet; he hugged her and gave in to the hysteria he'd barely kept at bay for the last few hours.
#37 - Lies
He'd made so many promises (a trip to Brighton, a house in the country, all of this and all of that all after the war), and yet... there he was, lying broken in a pool of blood, turning them all to falsehoods.
#38 - Forever
"We've got all the time in the world, now," Lenalee said with a laugh, and turned to face the sun as it rose; he slipped his arms around her waist and simply smiled.
#39 - Overwhelmed (tied to #1)
It seemed impossible, amongst all the wreckage--"Allen, this must have cost a fortune..."--and yet it wasn't--"...you didn't have to ask, you know what I'm going to say."
#40 - Whisper
"I'm not afraid to keep living by myself, if that's what you were worried about," she told the coffin-lid; the others didn't know why she wouldn't weep.
#41 - Wait
"I believe in him, that's why," she said, and smiled at Fou's complete lack of understanding.
#42 - Talk
There was something not right about a man who could be so coherent as his blood pooled steadily out onto the floor, but if it could keep him awake and there Lenalee would talk forever.
#43 - Search
He screamed her name until his voice broke, until he couldn't speak--Toma pulled at his sleeve, "Milord Walker they think they've found her please come quick"--and then pulled at the rubble until he couldn't move his arms.
#44 - Hope
He collapsed beside her, and smiled; she said something that might have been "I love you" if his hearing hadn't been shot dead with that last explosion, and shakily sat up, pulling him into an awkward hug and ignoring the blood and dust on the both of them for the sake of a quick kiss.
#45 - Eclipse
"It's like we're living in a powder keg, and if we spark too much it'll be brighter than the sun," he said, sounding somehow broken; she pulled him close and tried to make it right.
#46 - Gravity
He used to think that it'd be wonderful if everyone could fly--then he saw Lenalee fighting, and was glad that everyone had to stay on the ground, for if everyone could fly she'd be somehow less amazing.
#47 - Highway
"Weren't you the one who always told everyone to keep walking?" Lenalee asked teasingly, pulling him to his feet; ahead, the road stretched to the horizon.
#48 - Unknown
"What do you mean you don't know?" Lenalee screamed at her brother, refusing to believe that he couldn't reach Allen's team.
#49 - Lock
"I fell in love with you, not your hair," he murmurs, nevertheless nuzzling the now-short strands at the nape of her neck, and she feels strangely trapped.
#50 - Breathe
"Please don't die, the world still needs you," she said, watching Allen sleep in the infirmary, praying with every fall of his chest that it would rise again, "and... and I... I need you even more...."
