Ernie would lie in bed at night holding her pillow, it was the only comfort he had since Millicent had been gone.

As the lights cut out on New Year Eve, Ernie was surprised to feel lips brush against his own mouth followed by the scent of vanilla and he knew it was Millicent.

Millicent liked soft things like old pyjama bottoms, kittens, Ernie’s stomach and a whole army of other objects that she could cuddle.

“Millicent’s dead, Ernie.” Someone had said this to him hours ago; the sobs were still painful and robbed him of breath.

Millicent had just pulled her new mobile from her bag to show Ernie but before she could tell him about all the new technology that went into the handheld phones these days, he snatched it out of her hands and cackled with glee.

Trying not to giggle inside the huge box, Millicent stood very still as the delivery man wheeled the box into Ernie’s foyer and through his statements that he wasn’t expecting any gifts that large this year for Christmas.

Millicent longed for her childhood as she felt the wand tip press into her skin, knowing when she took Voldemort’s mark she would lose all claim to being innocent.

The movie Jerry Maguire never sat well with Ernie, he didn’t like the line, “You complete me.”

“That one looks like a troll--” she said pointing to a mass of white clouds just over Ernie’s head then she was silent, “Wait no, it looks like you.”

“Your eyes are the colour of the sky,” Ernie crooned to Millicent on Valentine’s Day.

Ernie always told his friends that being with Millicent was pleasant but really, it was heaven.

He had to wonder if he was in hell as Millicent walked by and the song “Simply Irresistible” by Robert Palmer popped into his thoughts, again.

“The sun is a horrible thing,” Millicent said as she and Ernie walked out into the sunlight, which made her squint.
