Whew, I've been itching to get these out here forever. I finished these on the day I claimed them. Yes, I am hasty. :D
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Zacharias Smith/Luna Lovegood
Theme set: Epsilon
Rating: soft R
Author's Note: Zacharias Smith came to me in the middle of one night and said, 'I am very shippable, you know,' and the next morning I snagged him with Luna, Blaise, and a number of other people. I like him with Luna the best, though. I really do.
#01 - Motion
Out on the Quidditch pitch, wind whipping through his ears like invisible threads, he wants to hit her for saying he has Loser’s Lurgy (what the fuck is Loser’s Lurgy anyway!?) and wants to complain it doesn’t exist because nothing says it does but another look at her and he realises hitting her would be such a shame.
#02 - Cool
He doesn’t know why the blasted cooling charms won’t work, but the inside of the castle is steaming hot and his hormonal, boyish mind wonders what she is doing in this heat, this wretched, wretched heat; something tells him she is probably very cool anyhow.
#03 - Young
The first time he saw her she looked twelve, a little girl in blue lost in a roaring fire (radishes swinging).
#04 - Last
And last summer she sent him a letter that said I picked you out of a hat and he didn’t remember the penpal service so he chucked it in the fire, where it crinkled, a little disappointedly.
#05 - Wrong
He thinks she’s stupid because she doesn’t know things and maybe she’s only in Ravenclaw because she thinks a little differently from others-maybe she isn’t really as intelligent as the house is named for-but a nagging thing in the back of his head screams wrong and he has to close his eyes because the feeling is so forceful.
#06 - Gentle
He kisses her blind when he catches up with her in the illuminated dusk, because it’s what he’s wanted from her all this time (just realised it), and as he’s running away he he hopes it didn’t hurt; hopes it was gentle the way he wishes he could be.
#07 - One
Is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do, and Zacharias’ heart does a little backflip when his father (now devoid of a wife after she left) says they’re moving to Ottery St. Catchpole: just the two of them (and her).
#08 - Thousand
The day he packs out he counts out a thousand flowers in his mother’s garden which will all die if he doesn’t save them.
#09 - King
“These flowers are fit for a king,” says his father, “who are you giving them to?”
#10 - Learn
In her own home, Luna sits at her desk and puts together piles of articles that a lot of her peers think are rubbish, but then again, the non-believers will never learn, thinks she with a secret smile.
#11 - Blur
Out her window she sees oodles of packages and bundles zooming past and wonders nonchalantly if the Crumple-Horned Snorcacks are mating yet.
#12 - Wait
Nope, it’s not mating season-Luna makes a pitcher of lemonade and sits on her porch.
#13 - Change
“The Smiths have moved in,” yells her father from his printing press, and Luna’s eyebrows disappear into her hairline.
#14 - Command
In his kitchen, Zacharias can’t remember the spell to get flowers arranged in a vase, so he knots them together with his mother’s old hair ribbon (which should mean something).
#15 - Hold
His grip is so tight his hand starts to bleed; fuck, he forgot to cut off the thorns.
#16 - Need
If Luna closes her eyes really, really tight, she can see feelings, and right now she can see he’s desperate for something.
#17 - Vision
It wasn’t a vision because it already happened, but last night Luna felt lips touch hers over and over again and when she woke up she remembered it: a steal in the forest when she was collecting yellow roses, someone catching up to her and seeking her out, mumbling things she can’t remember, radiating heat she can’t feel now.
#18 - Attention
No one ever kissed Luna before.
#19 - Soul
On the way to her house the flowers begin to wilt and Zacharias thinks well it’s the thought that counts, and look what I put into this anyway!
#20 - Picture
In an all-around act of concernment, Mr. Smith and Mr. Lovegood wonder why their children are taking so long, when the houses are only ten minutes apart (they were never experts at The Big Picture).
#21 - Fool
“They’re very pretty, thank you,” says Luna (not even mentioning the prospect of nargles that could be buried in the stems), walking back into her house, and Zacharias thinks his manlihood has just been beaten to the ground.
#22 - Mad
Voices, his friends, echo in his head as he turns on his heel, running back home: what do you mean you like her, Zach? You’re mad, you know she's not quite right in the head!
#23 - Child
Voices (the redhead) echo in her head as she correctly echoes the spell to arrange flowers in vases: I know you think I’m quite nice, Luna, but really, I’m not like that and you really should find a nice boy to keep you company (underlying message: you’re a child child child and maybe if you’d grow up I’d love you too)
#24 - Now
Ginny was wrong-Luna runs back out her front door to catch up with him and asks would you like to stay for tea?
#25 - Shadow
From his bedroom window, Mr. Lovegood sees two (two!) shadows (but they look like one!) disappear into his house.
#26 - Goodbye
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
#27 - Hide
In the middle of the night Luna’s stomach does little cartwheels and she thinks the natterbugs have gotten to her and it’s the middle of the blazing summer but she hides deep under her quilts anyway.
#28 - Fortune
Luna never thought she was lucky, and she still doesn’t, but Ginny (when she sees Zacharias smile as he leaves the Lovegood house) thinks otherwise.
#29 - Safe
“Do these things eat you?” asks Zacharias one day, skeptically looking over a few articles in The Quibbler and pointing to a description of a Crumple-Horned Snorcack and Luna says no, no, they don’t, they’re very nice creatures, and thinks even if they did it wouldn’t matter because I feel s-
#30 - Ghost
Luna’s mother tells her (in the hazy sunshine) that love is fickle and what is this boy doing to you?
#31 - Book
I’m nobody, who are you? reads Luna aloud, and looks up to find his face inches from hers whispering you’re not nobody, you’re mine and her heart falls into her stomach and past him her mother falls into a wisp of steam from the kettle.
#32 - Eye
“Could we ever see eye to eye?” They both smile at each other sadly.
#33 - Never
Writes Luna in her diary that night: I never thought this could happen, but then again, I never believed in never.
#34 - Sing
He has nightmares about his mother, like she used to, so they lie together in the field and she sings lullabies into the shell of his ear so quietly he has to strain to catch the words.
#35 - Sudden
One month has already passed by, and it’s another month until they have to return to being Them, Who They Are, Normally, With Barriers and Restrictions and Expectations, and Zacharias doesn’t want summer to end but Luna isn’t bothered by this because she is hardly bothered by anything (except what he does to her).
#36 - Stop
She tells him to stop (“Please, please stop-Zacharias-“) and his hormones scream what the fuck are you doing, listening to her, and he wonders yes what am I doing stopping, until he realises he loves her (loves her?) best when she feels safe (in his arms, preferably).
#37 - Time
It’s 3 o’clock in the morning and she runs to his house barefoot.
#38 - Wash
When he falls on the rocks and comes back gashed and bloody she forgoes all that she learned in medical practise and washes his cut with soap and water, her tiny hands fluttering delicately over his dirty wound, and this, Zacharias thinks in a twisted train of thought, is better than any sort of sex.
#39 - Torn
Luna knows what happens when you have sex, and she doesn’t really think being violated like that constitutes any sort of love existing between two people, because shoving something into someone else just sounds disgusting, really.
#40 - History
“Do these really exist, I mean have they always been here for all time?” asks Zacharias and Luna says calmly if you have faith, anything can exist forever and always.
#41 - Power
“Do you have faith in Voldemort?” Luna asks one day, and Zacharias looks at her like she just slapped him in the face, and just like that one day when she said he had Loser’s Lurgy (which DOES NOT exist) he wants to hit her again and feels like a bastard for it but instead he says “Of course I don’t!” (even though he has faith in power) and stalks off.
#42 - Bother
She knows she’s blunt, and that it bothers people, but keeping things in, she thinks, is just stupid.
#43 - God
“Do you have faith in God?” is what he asks her when he finally comes back and she nods yes and then they meet each other halfway.
#44 - Wall
Do you have faith in me, Luna wants to moan when she’s pressed up against the wall, but inside she knows the answer is yes, definitely, even if you are a silly twit (which you’re not).
#45 - Naked
He traces circles with his fingernail on her bare, bare skin, creating pathways to places she herself didn’t even know existed.
#46 - Drive
Luna knows what happens when you have sex, and she doesn’t really think being violated like that constitutes any sort of love existing between two people, because shoving something into someone else just sounds disgusting, really she thinks it’s like driving: ultimate speed, ultimate power, ultimate conclusion (she throws her head back and he bites her neck).
#47 - Harm
“Is this okay?” he asks, and she says yes, yes, you’re very gentle, just like you always wanted to be.
#48 - Precious
Once he held a crystal sculpture his mother had made and he’d dropped it because he was careless, and his mother cried all night long because, she said, it was her best work and her most precious and he’d thought then aren’t I your best work and your most precious, and now he swears if he drops her he’s going to kill himself.
#49 - Hunger
Zacharias thinks there’s nothing better than feeling full after you’ve been hungry for such a long time.
#50 - Believe
The look on Luna’s face says I believe you even before Zacharias gets to say I love you and the summer’s going to end in a week, but neither of them really give even half of a damn.
