Sometimes she caught herself wondering, as the telephone sounded off, if there was any chance Usopp remembered her.
2. Hero
He didn't exactly know what constituted a brave warrior of the sea, but he knew that he would achive that goal when Kaya thought he was a hero.
3. Memory
One gazed at the stars through a window, one from a ship's deck--but both shared the same happy memories.
4. Box
Kaya kept her diary locked away in a small wooden box to keep prying butlers' eyes from reading about her true feelings for Usopp.
5. Run
He had gotten braver through all the long days since he'd left her, and he tried to imagine what she would think about how infrequently he ran away now.
6. Hurricane
Usopp made a mental note to tell Kaya that the thunderstorm he had just survived was actually a raging hurricane.
7. Wings
He wondered if she would believe him when he told her about the people with wings....
8. Cold
When she awoke, shivering the night air, she considered shutting her window, but couldn't bring herself to.

As he bled profusely from his wounds, Usopp hoped that the only thing that shade of red that Kaya would ever see would be wine.

Once, when Nami had convinced him to get completely plastered with her and Zoro, he had said too much about his feelings for Kaya--luckily, Nami had forgotten the whole ordeal by the next day.
11. Midnight
The others always tried to get out of midnight watch duty, but Usopp loved it, and took it as an opportunity to paint pictures of his beautiful blonde angel back home.
12. Temptation
It was all Kaya could do to keep from jumping on the next ship that sailed into port and following after him.
13. View
Had anyone else stumbled and fallen with a clear view up Nami’s skirt, they would’ve looked--but Usopp was loyal, even with his eyes.

Sometimes as he was helping clean the ship, he sung old shanties of the warrior’s return to a princess at port.

She knew she’d never see him in anything made of silk, but she was sick of the stuff anyway.

Kaya studied her textbooks by day, but at night, she pulled the covers over her head and read about pirates and damsels and their flights of romance.

“Well, Merry,” he sighed as he patted the creaky old ship’s hull, “I made Kaya a promise…but now I don’t know what to do….”

“We all have our dreams,” the ship seemed to reply, “and you need to reach yours and go back home to her, even if I can’t help you.”

A candle in the window--that was the cliché he was looked for as he titled his latest artwork.

Some people could weave baskets, and some could weave rugs, but Usopp--he could wave magic spells with his stories for her.

Sometimes she laughed, and sometimes she listened in silence, but she adored him with every new story.

When he set out from Syrup Village, he never imagined he’d go to snow islands, jungles, deserts, and even the base of the World Government--but he couldn’t wait to tell Kaya about his amazing journey.

“The ship was damaged by a man with a lance and a fire-breathing bird!” wailed Chopper, and Usopp mentally apologized for allowing harm to befall Kaya’s present.

She might have been weak, but his stories gave her a strength she never thought possible.

Usopp might try to hide his true identity from the others out of pride, but it would be only for amusement if ever he donned the Sogeking mask for Kaya.

“The Grandline weather sure is crazy,” thought Usopp, as he made a Kaya sculpture from ice and snow.

It was a mild time of the year in Syrup Village, and it made Kaya feel lonesome to see the leaves separating themselves from the trees and drifting so far away.

Whenever the dark-skinned boy sat in her tree, her sickness was completely forgotten.
29. Dance
When he was alone on night watch, sometimes he would hum to himself and twirl around, as if she was there in his arms and they were on a glorious ballroom floor.

Sure, he wasn’t above thinking that her body was beautiful, but he was more honorable than someone so shallow as the lusty ship’s cook.

"No, Merry, I love that tree, you can't cut it down!" she shouted, with such a passion that the butler could only leave the old tree right where it was.

Usopp had made plenty of friends everywhere he'd been, and he'd had to eventually leave them all behind, but none of those farewells were as difficult as leaving Kaya.

"I'd sail to the end of the world and back just to look good in your beautiful eyes..." he drunkenly crooned--luckily, Robin was the only one still awake, and she only smiled as the sharpshooted karaoked on to the absent girl from his village.

She'd been to plenty of formal balls, but none of the handsome young suitors were anything special compared to the pirate who was out there, somewhere.
35. Fever
While he worried with the others about the feverish, ill navigator, he remembered another sickly girl he knew, and wondered if she thought of him.
36. Laugh
He never wondered why he braved the guards at her mansion nearly every day--he knew it was because nothing was more satisfying to him than to hear her laugh.
37. Lies
He had it all planned out in his mind-when the adventure was over, he’d rush home to Kaya with a thousand new stories, at least…and none of them would be lies.

They’d never verbally promised it to each other, but someday, they would share it.
39. Overwhelmed
Kaya bolted upright in her bed, overwhelmed by the steamy dream she’d had-most likely because of the pirate romance novel she’d fallen asleep reading.

Hushed voices whispered that she was never going to get married, but she was truly being loyal to the only one she’d ever wanted for a husband.
41. Wait
“I can wait” was her motto-her life’s mantra, recited daily to the horizon.

“What I want to do the most,” he confided to Chopper one day, “is just talk to her again.”

When Usopp lost one of his favorite paintings of Kaya, he turned the ship inside-out in a silent, frantic search until he located it again.

He had no need for it, being such an adventurous spirit, but Kaya had to talk herself into her hope with each new sunrise.

It was just one more extravagant sight to add to his list of tales that warranted his sitting in the tree outside her window again someday.

Even halfway around the world, Usopp’s thoughts were pulled toward Kaya, as if he were a lone, floating rock in space, and she, the sun.

She read in a book once that sailors considered the ocean their most precious commodity, because it was the highway that gave them both adventure and romance.

As an onlooker, Merry sometimes wondered if Kaya realized that her feelings were completely unknown to the long-gone Usopp, but he let her long-distance love carry on anyway.

Kaya pried the lock off of her bedroom window in the hopes that Usopp might someday just come inside, out of that tree.
