As a note: Since the Hero of the game had no default first name, I shall be using Devur for his name, as I have for the 10+ fanfictions I have written for the series. There are also spoilers if you have not played or beaten Lufia and the Fortress of Doom.
#01 - Motion
Lufia had no idea that the ancient legends about the Sinistrals were about to come true, but realized as soon as Devur had came back from Sheran in a hurry that something was wrong; just the way he looked spoke volumes as she glanced at him from her bedroom window-but that didn’t mean she would come down and see him, since she was still angry that she went to the trouble to make him dessert and he skipped out without telling her.
#02 - Cool
Her lavender eyes were like darkened icicles as he watched her in battle for the first time, casting her favorite magical spell; sure, it was on a bunch of kobolds, but Devur saw for the first time her true potential and realized she was not the helpless woman that she let herself out to be at times-rather, she was a cool and collected individual, when there was no other competition against her for his affection.
# 03 - Young
As she went through Chatam, Lufia’s feelings of her childhood returned to her as she gazed at Lilah’s flower garden that was behind her house-often, she was reminded of how much the Priphea flowers would only bloom once every three years and how she waited all her life for those blossoms; the irony was they bloomed the day before she had set out for her journey, relinquishing her childhood dream.
#04 - Last
The last time Devur saw Lufia’s bright eyes and smile was right before they had gotten to Glasdar Tower, to which he regretted ever thinking that this beautiful girl could ever lay a hand on him; and even as he saw her now, in her last throes of life, cradled in his arms, he could not acquiescence to her request because it simply killed him inside and he did not want his childhood lover to die.
#05 - Wrong
He felt as if he was wrong now in allowing his friend to go with him on this journey in the first place, despite the fact that Lufia was a catalyst in her own right-Devur put his hands on his face, allowed the red hair to blow violently against the wind of that day and wept at the passing of his best friend; yet he did not know that soon enough, her Sinistral aura would be resurrected once again.
#06 -Gentle
As Devur watched the Priphea bloom, he was reminded of Lufia, of the lavender haired girl that had shunned him upon returning from Sheran-and wanted her to know that he loved her; yet as he thought he could not tell her, he saw a streak of lavender hair behind him and arms embrace him-telling him that no words needed to be exchanged, since it was already said by what she was doing; he came to the conclusion that some women were like gentle flowers, because they held up in whatever kind of weather they were put in, and they still bloomed for the world to see-and so did his friend when she was confused about what was going on with her life.
#07 -One
There was only one reason that Lufia had attempted to go with Devur in the first place, yet he was brushing her aside, as if he had someone else to share affection with-and Lufia did not want that half-elf to be the one to give Devur something that only Lufia could give, since she knew he was the one for her.
#08 - Thousand
“One thousand years, and the whole word will go to hell, according to these stupid scrolls,” Devur scoffed at his history lesson long ago-as if he would actually believe that the Sinistrals only returned then-but if the boy would have taken out a zero, he would realize that they would return in his time, in 100 years-and no one was prepared for when the Sinistrals would strike.
#09 - King
Lufia had to laugh at the knights of Alekia, because they were mostly a laughing stock of the town since the King had stopped making the knights train for battle-she simply thought that peace was allowing their village to remain lax, all but Devur, who took his training seriously; Lufia realized that despite the King having so much power that he could also be rather idiotic.
#10 - Learn
Devur blinked as he gazed over to the half-elf that was walking up to him and had a smile on her face, the tears no longer coming down her cheeks-and then he saw Lufia walking behind her, waving happily as she pounced on the short blonde figure in front of her-it was something new he learned about the girl he loved and that despite the fact that she was often jealous of other women around him, she still would go to the trouble to comfort someone who was considered their friend.
#11 - Blur
The whole thing was sudden; his mind disconnected with his body as he allowed the whole scene to take place in his mind again-Daos’ smug look on his face as he held his best friend under his control and Lufia who had summoned Dual Blade away from the knight’s hands and shoving the blade in her own heart; his vision had blurred after he saw what she was going to do and tried to run, but his legs collapsed under him as his world shattered in that single, blurry instant.
#12 -Wait
Waiting was hard, but she knew she must wait for him for return again-for she knew as well as her ‘father’ that Devur would have to leave Alekia, and when that time came, she would go with him; and she knew that her promise to him would be empty and yet, would comfort him, in a sense-and that filled her heart with dread, for she felt that if anyone would die on this journey, it would be her.
#13 - Change
It was sudden, Devur thought, as he saw the woman in front of him staring at something in the sky; one moment the girl had been determined to actually come out of this journey alive and after Soshette, she had become very afraid of the thought of facing the Sinistrals and wondered how she could change her view on her life so quickly-because he needed the peppy upbeat girl to give him words of encouragement, to know that he was doing something right.
#14 - Command
Commanding was something that Lufia had always done; it was one of her many talents in the group of four-yet, since Aguro and Jerin had joined up with him, Devur had seemed to put her advice aside and used his own intitution to get through places; while she knew he was perfectly capable, she did not like the fact of a man commanding her when she perfectly knew how to handle herself in a situation-it just made her angry that she had lost control of the situation.
#15 -Hold
Something woke him up from his sleep as he noticed that the warmth he had in his ‘bed’ an hour ago had left him-when he looked over, he saw Lufia trembling and hugging herself, despite the fact that was cold enough outside, let alone inside the tent that they were in; he rose out of bed and tapped her shoulder, where she turned around and cried as she held his form to hers-apparently, she had relived nightmares that only he could quell once again.
#16 -Need
Devur needed to see her open her eyes again-the sight of his friend laying so still in his arms unnerved him, despite the blood that was pouring out of the wound on her arm; when lavender orbs flickered, he sighed in relief, not realizing that he was holding his breath the entire time.
#17 -Vision
At the Lorbenian shop, Devur had seen visions of women in the expensive dresses that they had purchased for over 5,000 gold pieces and wondered how Lufia would look in one of those-but the thought was pushed out of his mind as she brushed past them this time and went for the exit door of the shop.
#18 - Attention
“I shouldn’t have to vie for your attention, Devur,” Lufia whispered as he saw him talking with Jerin, tears stinging her eyes; “I should be the only one you see-I’m the only one who’ll love you for you, not her, not anyone else!”
#19 -Soul
Oh god, Lufia thought as she heard Daos’ chilling words, the revelation he was speaking hitting the core of her soul; It’s not true-I can’t be a reincarnation and I have the power to bring the Sinstrals back to life-then . . . then . . . then just who am I?!
#20 --Picture
Aguro was sometimes confused, but even he understood the words that were being spoken between Daos and Devur, and the picture was painted clearly-but despite that Lufia was a reincarnation of the Mistress of Death, Devur would still love her, and that was what Aguro feared the most-that they would lose in the war against them before they even reached Doom Island.
#21 - Fool
“While it was unsettling to watch you leave your brothers,” Daos told Lufia as she tried to back away from him, “it was more foolish call to Devur by Maxim’s name . . . because now you understand that you indeed our Sister and that the time for Maxim’s blood to be distinguished is now.”
#22 - Mad
Devur hated to see his friend upset, but at the same time, Lufia needed to be told when to back off from fighting with Jerin-simply because he could not stand to see the elven girl cry, or hear her ask why she had to be so mean; it was times like this that Jerin felt alone and he wished that Lufia could understand that both girls were similar in that aspect instead of taking her anger out on him like she always did.
#23 -Child
“Just because I look like a child doesn’t mean I can’t feel pain,” Jerin told Lufia as she threw the woman’s bag at her-and Lufia caught it, an angered look on her face as she was being told off by that child in front of her.
#24 -Now
“Don’t give me that, Devur-I told you once, I want it done, and I want it done now-without any hesitation . . . you know what you have to do, so just do it and forget about your feelings for me!” Lufia whispered, feeling the warmth of her friend’s body as her own went cold.
#25 -Shadow
”Even if you have doubts, her shadow will always linger, because she’s just that damn stubborn,” Aguro told Devur as Jerin warped them out of Doom Island, hoping to lighten the situation.
#26 -Goodbye
”Just because you’re saying goodbye,” Devur heard Lufia say as she held him, “doesn’t mean I won’t see you again, because I’ll make sure I do-this I promise.”
#27 -Hide
Lufia never slept much after leaving Doom Island when it was underwater, Devur noticed, since she could hide from her dreams, where she told him she had killed him.
#28 -Fortune
She hadn’t much money, but what she did earn from killing some jellies Lufia took and bought a scabbard for Devur’s sword--which she gave him when he was knighted later, three years after their journey was over.
#29 -Safe
He remembered why he didn’t want Lufia to go running off in battle with a hot head-Devur needed to be reassured that he kept his friend and lover safe whenever he was by her side.
#30 -Ghost
“They’re like ghosts,” Jerin said as she shivered in the cold, “the past returns to haunt you, when you least expect it, and so do demons-I think they’re the same thing-almost.”
#31 - Book
Lufia never noticed Aguro watching her read a book about swordplay and smirked as he walked away-he wouldn’t tell Devur her secret about besting him in a duel someday, because that was for him to discover and it would be worth the priceless look on the redheaded knight’s face.
#32 -Eye
“Those girls never see eye to eye off the battlefield,” Devur muttered softly to Aguro as he watched the two bicker, “but they work remarkably well together . . . just don’t tell them I told you anything.”
#33 -Never
And Aguro laughed, watching as well when he replied, “I never heard a thing.”
#34 -Sing
Lufia had seen a lot of things on her travels with Devur, but one of the worst memories was when they camped outside of Raile Shaia’s lab, because Aguro had tried serenading to Jerin-and it was one of the worst things she had ever heard; yet, was well worth the look on the half-elf’s face as she blushed, screamed in horror, and then flung herself in the river and swam away from him.
#35 - Sudden
It was sudden-one minute, he was by himself, trying to spar with himself and the next minute he had an audience and blushed furiously as he saw Lufia picking up Aguro’s rapier that he had been using earlier-and as he made a look of disapproval at her-she knocked the sword out of his hands in one fluid motion.
#36 -Stop
Devur’s blue eyes stopped looking disgusted and instead, lifted to happiness as he saw the lavender haired sorceress with the sword in her hand.
#37 - Time
“I knew all the time,” Aguro later told Lufia as they were packing up their sleeping bags, “that you are just as equal as Devur in a lot of things-but what I think about all the time is why you two fight the way you do when you should just tell the other how you feel.”
#38 -Wash
“You know what the hardest part about this is . . . “ Lufia mused as she walked alongside Jerin, who seemed rather upset that morning-“you can’t really wash up properly before the men decide they want to leave . . . so . . . we should get them back later somehow,” Lufia muttered as she saw Jerin smile.
#39 -Torn
Her two halves were fighting with themselves and Lufia didn’t know whether to listen to the part that was Erim or the part that was Lufia, torn apart between the consequences of the decision she was about to make.
#40 -History
“They say history repeats itself,” Jerin told Devur, “but I wouldn’t worry-Lufia won’t make the same mistake twice-even if she did love someone else the first time she was a Sinistral.”
#41 - Power
He did not have enough power to save her from herself and that’s what tore Devur apart the most when he saw her reincarnated form, with no memories of him or of their journey together.
#42 - Bother
Often Lufia would hear Devur walk up to her and sit next to him at night, near the campfire and she would cuddle against him, muttering that she was sorry for being a bother-and Devur would shake his head, pull her close and smiled as his blue eyes twinkled.
#43 - God
God had to be looking down on him, because Devur awoke on Christmas morning with Lufia standing over him in a soft green bathrobe, a smile on her face as her wet hair surrounded her face, and a hot breakfast waiting for him as she sat the tray down on the nightstand and fed him a piece of bacon, whispering, “Merry Christmas, Hero---now eat up, before I give the food to Jerin, who was rather amused that I was cooking in the first place.”
#44 - Wall
The problem with women, Devur surmised, was that they had too many walls that they hid themselves in, so you never really knew what they were thinking until they were either pissed off, or too depressed to care.
#45 - Naked
Aguro and Devur never kept track of where they were walking and had stumbled in a room with two naked women dressing for the day . . . and as the brush hit his forehead, Devur realized that Lufia had a nice body when she wasn’t dressed, and wished that she would stay naked more often.
#46 - Drive
As they rode in the submarine that Raile was driving, Lufia and Devur hugged each other, scared for their lives that Raile Shaia would kill them before they had reached their destination-despite the fact that it was only a 20 minute ride.
#47 - Harm
Harm could be a dangerous thing, Jerin knew-and she witnessed it first hand as she watched Devur ripping himself apart after they got to Soshette and Lufia was unconscious for over 12 hours . . . all because Daos had to tamper and unlock the harmful memories she locked away in her mind.
#48 - Precious
“You’re worth a lot to me, precious,” Devur whispered to Lufia as she was sleeping-“but I could never tell you that while you were awake, because you get pissed off when you’re embarrassed.”
#49 - Hunger
Hunger led to desperation, which led to scatterbrained thoughts, which led to low performance, which led to Lufia’s lack of concentration as she watched Aguro and Jerin munching on what was left of the fish they caught for dinner-and-seeing that there was one left, she ran over for it, grabbed the fish that was burnt on the grill and munched on it hungrily, despite the stares she got from the two, because she hated salmon with a passion.
#50 - Believe
Devur never thought he would find love in his childhood friend, but after watching her grow throughout their journey together, he smiled and began to believe that he could find love after all-he just didn’t know when or if he should tell her he loved her or not.
