He never has figured out just how it is that Duke never runs out of energy but has grown to enjoy the challenge of trying to keep up.

Jai knows how much Duke wants them to watch the sunrise together, so he stays up for hours into Sunday mornings after the other has lost the battle with sleep just so he can watch it for the both of them.

Jai has resolved that the next apartment he moves to is going to have tile floors because he is tired of the itch of splinters across his shoulder blades.

When Jai returns to his own apartment it feels like his stalking grounds, when he returns to Duke’s it feels more and more like home

Whenever he feels the trust Duke places in him with each reassurance that change is unneeded Jai feels pure victory, whenever someone else makes his words a lie he cannot help but want to slit their throat to make the mockery go away.

Determined finally, Jai knows that if need be he would find a way to sit upon the banks of the Styx to wait for Duke to finish his chores.

Before movies and That Game Jai thought it madness to laugh with all your being but watching Duke’s Cheshire-grin he understands it madness being afraid to.

Duke is his death, that devotion slow and eating at his soul like an illness to his body that breaks the carefully constructed walls, and Jai cannot help but delight in the agony.

If the tables were turned Duke would still be his sin and his redemption, and he would still starve for want of both.

It is that fall from grace and perfection in Duke that Jai watches in tiny degrees and could not be more proud of him for.

The simplest of details, the way Duke’s dark hair slides in waves against the dance of air brought on by the fan of a breeze, reminds Jai how much the rest of the world must take for granted.
