my boots are great for keeping feet warm and dry but not very supportive. they are a bit stylish in that they have a heel
they go about mid calf and are black
i think they were about 10 at target so they serve their purpose economically
what they don't offer is support
which, should not matter as i've been walking on my own for more than 30 years now
however
it does matter as i have a tendency to slip, slide, or tumble even when i don't have a heel, add a heel and weak ankles becomes an added factor
so, last night on the way to dinner i had a minor twist and stumble, i didn't fall but i did twist
fortunately the twist was followed by some wine and the pain diminished. i thought the pain had just gone away but in reality i was masking it!!!
by the time i got home i had had probably three glasses of shiraz so my nose was runny (i am pretty certain i have some minor red wine allergy) and i felt little pain but still had most of my faculties
when i got home i took 2 benadryl and elevated my foot on a stack of 3 pillows - somewhere along the line 2 bed pillows became 6 so i have a bit of a surplus ... very handy when guests arrive!!!
i digress
so, foot elevated
sleep a bit
hot in apartment
or am i feverish ... probably a bit of both
wake up a few times and have odd dreams, woke up thinking i was some sort of auditor
a few times in the early morning the ankle felt great and i walked to the bathroom and decided - hmm, nope, not so great
began to dread the trek to the train in the morning
began to think of shoe alternatives because i just could not absolutely could not envision putting the boots back on
i have some short boots but i didn't think they would do it either
and suddenly
i remember the shoes that i bought when i got a membership at ballys back in 1998 or 9, shoes that i wore only to the gym then so they would remain clean. in LA i wore them to play tennis and in sac i wore them to the gym and very very infrequently elsewhere
i put them on this morning and walked around a little ... i didn't even have a shirt on yet but i had at least figured out my footwear!
it was a little painful but supportive and somewhat comforting
i took a naproxin sodium (pda name for muscle relaxer, aka annaprox, aka alieve .. pda stands for physicians desk reference which is a humongous book of pills and stuff - mom's had one since i was little so one of my odd and perhaps interesting fun facts is that i know the technical name for many many many medicines and how they work and whatnot)
again i digress
took my little pill and another benadryl and walked to the train to go to work, by the time i got down the stairs the ankle wasn't so bad and walking was not the chore i had feared. please note that the pain this morning was far far far less than when i had gone to bed and when i had woken up a few times in the night
i got to work and had very little pain
kept my oh so stylish gym shoes on for a few hours, they didn't look so stylish with my slacks of course
after a couple hours i took off the clunky gym shoes and put on my flats that live under my desk and had little if any pain
now, i have a teeny weeny bit of tenderness but really feel pretty ship shape - i give all the credit to this great pair of shoes that i bought back in 98 or 9 for somewhere around $50. I must say that Wilson makes a pretty solid shoe.
good shoes are very important
never forget
there are fun shoes and work shoes and gym shoes and style boots and function boots
mukluks and klogs duck shoes and flip flops
all have their purposes but when one takes off the flippy fun, it is great comfort to know that solid and soft support is near at hand to fix what style has compromised
