it is hard to get used to being back in chicago
much of the time that i was away there were a million things i missed and saw them in my mind's eye with a special shine, like that of a new toy at christmastime
getting back i remember the touch of gray, i go to places i remember and something is different now
matildas is a bar near where i used to live years ago, they had fabulous grilled calimari, not the fried rubberbands but a really fantastic piece of seafood. i used to be able to go in there when the place was packed and the bar tender would recognize me and bring me a guinness. that was long ago, they don't have the calimari anymore. the place looks the same inside but it is different.
i went to ceres the other day, it is the restaurant/bar in the board of trade building. the wait staff is the same, the drinks are the same, but the place is like walking into an ashtray, the outer edges are safer than the center but no matter where you are in the bar, if you're in there for more than 2 hours you are going to feel it later. i got home that night, walked in the door, locked it, took off 98% of my clothes at the doorway went into my room and stuck on a tshirt and fell into bed face first, woke up hacking and wheezing at 3 am.
anyway, back to the point
there are good things about being back but i am reminded of bad things that went away out west that had become a distant memory and that have now returned
1 - migraines
2 - i still have my tonsils, should have had them removed 25 years ago but didn't, now they are acting up.
middle of a perfectly fine day yesterday suddenly i have sharp pain in my throat and when i touch my neck under my jaw i am swollen. I looked in the bathroom mirror and my tonsils were white. i got all achy and a little light headed. this thing hit me like a figgin train.
stupid tonsils
last night i put icy hot on my shoulders and vicks on my neck and sat in a hot bath for an hour and a half, watched Medium, read a little of A Painted House, and went to bed
i stayed home today (gave the boss the heads up yesterday), slept late, felt human again
ran an errand to the post office and the store for a lemon and some medicine, by the time i got home my head was full of hydrogen and being squeshed in a vice, my neck and back were achy and i was just ucky in general
i bought nyquil and citrus alka seltzer, i also bought that airborne to keep at work for next time i hear the virus train coming through
i will probably go to work tomorrow, maybe i'll go home early if i'm unwell but i have to at least process a few things on my desk
anyway, i'm hot and ucky even though it is only 72 in here
i'm going back to my book now and my tea pot
