A Whitsett teen died Sunday evening in a single-car accident that left three others injured.
State Highway Patrol Trooper S.F. Green said Gregory Van Dickey II, 20, of Burlington Road, Whitsett, was driving a 2003 Ford sedan north on Sedalia Road when he crossed the center line and hit a ditch on the left side of the road. The impact caused the car to roll several times before landing 186 feet down the road, Green said.
The accident happened at around 6:15 p.m. on Sedalia Road near Gantwood Lane.
Dickey and 16-year-old Devin E. Leggett, of the same address, were ejected from the car. Leggett, who was sitting in the rear right passenger area, died of his injuries. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, Green said.
Dickey and two other passengers - 18-year-old Keeley Dillon, of Rankin Mill Road, McLeansville (front passenger), and 17-year-old Cassey N. Tucker, of Carmen Road, Gibsonville (left rear passenger) - were taken to Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. Green said Tucker and Dickey had visible injuries.
Dickey was listed Monday in good condition. Dillon and Tucker were treated and released.
The cause of the accident wasn’t immediately known but Green said Dickey was going at 60 mph. The posted speed limit in that section of the road is 45 mph.
Green said the investigation is ongoing and that charges may be pending. He said the trooper who is investigating the accident has yet to talk with the district attorney
