Um, this could be all in my head due to unreasonable expectations, and if that's the case then I'd like to know.
But.
It really really seems to me that season 3 of Teen Wolf constitutes a drastic dive in quality, compared to season 2.
I re-watched eps 1-4 to be sure, and then ep 5 kind of clinched it for me. The episodes feel shorter (heck, mabye they are shorter) and less is happening in each, they seem slower and more boring and some character changes feel sudden and weird. When s1 & 2 were bursting with crazy things just waiting their turn (and as often not) to happen, s3 feels like they're drawing one thing out trying to make it last and spreading it thin. It's all just a big cock tease.
It always bugged me that the werewolves when in full werewolf mode look ugly and ridiculous and yet they insist on showing them... Derek in s3 ep 5 in full light had me cringing away and squinting at the tv. It's only made worse by the fact that I do think they look really nice when only half-turned werewolf. The teeth are way better than True Blood's vamp teeth.
It bugs me that when they want us to think someone is dead from falling a long, long way and landing hard, they don't make him look any more torn up than from any regular fight he's had before. It bugs me that the good guy werewolves who have tracked people by scent several times before, suddenly don't know how to do that and are trying to track by sight - just so that the veteran hunter can come in and join forces and teach them how to really track werewolves (by scent - which they don't really do after that, anyway).
Oh, oh - and that's the love interest they pick for Derek?? Really? I can't stand her, and it's not just because she is not me, not even before she met Derek.
Maybe it's all due to the fact that I started watching the show for the charm and fun that is Stiles and the insane salty goodness that is Derek. Maybe there's less of Derek and he's less (evil and angry and bad tempered) fun, and I don't like Stiles' new hair and maybe there's a loss of soul in his character. Maybe I cannot take any alpha pack seriously that has Encino Man in it... (Generation Kill pun). I don't even know where the slash went.
Maybe the show is exactly how it's been, and I just want it to be better and more to my tastes. I dunno.
There were some awesome moments of course, like Derek demonstrating for Stiles' benefit how he can punch through a stone wall with no room to swing, Uma Thurman-style. And everyone's favorite uncle Peter is still a bit of fun, when he gets a rare moment over there in the back.
Let's not talk about the fanfic right now, either, because wtf.
