Okay, I love Bryan Adams. He’s a great songwriter, he’s a great singer, and can play an instrument. But live, I thought his band made his shows. Keith would take over the heavy guitar work and Bryan was free to run about and get interactive with the crowds. So after years of performing like that, I thought Bryan wouldn’t be able to pull off a lot of stuff without Keith.
I was so fucking wrong!!!
I don’t think I can explain just how amazing he is. He freaking blew me away!!! He went to songs I didn’t think he would do. Just him, a guitar and a harmonica. And occasionally a pianist named Gary came out, but for those rockers, he nailed them. I just want to invade his personal space, I love him so much, ha ha ha.
The stage set up was quite bare, but really beautiful at the same time. 6 yellow stage lights were set up around the mic. The back curtain was drawn leaving a brick wall, some pipes as a backdrop which changed colours throughout the evening. He came out with his plain black button up and jeans. And a cup to which he said, “it’s just tea, don’t get any ideas!” He was coughing in between breaks, but still went for every note.
Run To You
He began to muse about the last time he was here, saying it’s been a long time since he came to Winnipeg. Someone in the crowd yelled, too long, and another person yelled “it’s been two years!!”, and then he went. “Oh, so it’s hasn’t been that long, whaddya complaining about?!”
Here I Am (Hee Hee, I wooed when it was all quiet) He talked about getting the offer for writing music for the movie, working with Hans Zimmer and how hard it was to write music for a movie with very little dialogue! Hahaha, best part of song near the end he sang “here I am………without my band”
He said that the new album started off as an acoustic, but he changed his mind and brought the guys back in. "Then as soon as we put the album out, I started doing acoustic shows, I just can't make up my mind."
Tonight We Have the Stars - after this one, some people near the front were trying to find their seats, and Bryan said, “Glad you could finally join us! You missed some good stuff, should I start from the beginning?”, and people actually yelled yes, ha haha.
Best Was Yet To Come - (YAY!) about how the song was about a Playboy bunny. He was obsessed with the fact that she came from the same place as him and she worked at Dairy Queen, and why “didn’t I work at Dairy Queen?!” Then he said her rise to fame was really short, after she moved to LA, her boyfriend killed her.
When You Love Someone - Said that after the unplugged album came out, this song got a new life. People from the movie Hope Floats approached him about using this song and “I just went all fuzzy and thought: Lunch with Sandra Bullock!, but yeah, that didn’t happen”
Back To You
Talked about Valentine’s day, and asked the crowd who they thought came up with Valentine’s Day. Then he said, yeah, it was probably a women’s idea. “And let this be a reminder, guys don’t fuck it up, You’ll pay!”
And then a lady from the third row got up and gave him a rose, and HE GAVE HER A HUG, I’m so jealous! Damn it, why couldn’t I have been closer! I would have……thrown indecent proposals at him, lol.
Thought I’d Seen Everything - making eyes and glances at girl who game him the rose
Heat of the Night - about an old orson wells movie, spys, Vienna, "sounds like a pop song!"
Can’t Stop This Thing We Started
Let’s Make a Night To Remember - on tour for 5 years, band was marrying each other, divorcing each other, he talked about going to Jamaica, how it was suppose to be for a couple weeks, ended up a year
Seven Spanish Angels - story about being in texas and some guy came into his dressing room, and gave him this letter about how willie nelson is really important to his kid brother who is serving in iraq. Bryan looked at the guy who brought him the letter and he said, “can you sign this guitar?” And “i was really confused, and wondering where security is. I told the guy that he’s obviously got the wrong guy, but the guy just said, 'I don’t care man, sign the guitar!'" And at this point Bryan was still wondering where security is, lol. So he sang this song as a tribute to the kid brother in iraq, and because it’s a really nice song.
Not Romeo, Not Juliet - “Gary really wants to do this one! Out of all the songs he could have chosen I don’t know why he picked this one…..Because it had a GREAT PIANO SOLO!!!
Heaven - Before we knew what the next song was, he mentioned it was written for a movie. The movie company really wanted him to do a song for the movie which was about a male stripper. He came to Jim Valance who thought I was an idiot. And then I told him what the movie was about! . But how can you write a song about a male stripper? Pants are down and you’re done!!! So we decided to use the part of the title of the movie A Night In Heaven and we get…. Heaven. I’m really sorry if this ruins the song for you, especially if it meant something to you. Maybe you used it at your wedding, now you're going 'see I told you we shouldn’t have picked that song!!!'” lol
Please Forgive Me - He started sing the second verse all twangy all purpose, “hey it sounds like a country song!” it was really funny.
Someone wooo, (not me this time, haha) and he turned to Gary, “that’s the Winnipeg mating call, you hear that in a bar, you know what it means, it’s unmistakable!”
This Time
Summer of 69 - how it was not about the year specifically….more about time spent…..a sexual position
BREAK
Everything I Do, I Do It For You (EEEEEEEEEEEE!)
You’re Still Beautiful To Me (I CAN’T BELIEVE I GOT TO HEAR THIS, this is the one song I thought I would never get to hear. awwwwwwwwww I loves this song)
One Night Love Affair
Only Thing That Looks Good on Me
Oxygen
Cuts Like a Knife - how it took him out of the shitty clubs to the lesser shittier clubs. And now look at him, he didn’t ever think he’d still be doing this job 30 years later.
He asks the crowd if there was anything that they wanted to hear. At this point I had trouble thinking stuff up cause he had done so many good ones already. And when I did think of some they were seven word long song titles like Thought I Died and Gone To Heaven, or Do I Have To Say The Words and would not come across loud and clear, hahaha. Shorter titles buddy!!!
Kids Wanna Rock - EXTREMELY WICKED AWESOME
Walk On By
Song that he had written for Ray Charles, but never got to him in time. And eventually it went to Taylor Hicks. I can not believe how right on this song would have been for Ray Charles!!!!
Encore
I’m Ready
Straight From the Heart
He brought out his camera and said he had to take a picture of the crowd, but we all had to make a heart with our index fingers and thumbs. He said it was going to end up on his website. (haven’t seen it yet, but damn fan club peeps probably have access to it, I should just join the damn thing, there was apparently a meet and greet and I’m seething over the fact I could have been thisclose to bryan adams!!)
All For Love
And that’s all folks. Two standing ovations, and a an “awe shucks” grin from Bryan to cap off a perfect setting.
