Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Short. Really, really short. Sarah Michelle Gellar in actuality is only like…5’1. And as for build, Buffy is pretty thin. Some might call her skinny, but there’s a definite amount of muscle to her body, so she’s more toned than anything.
2. How old is she?
Her age ranges with my mood from anywhere between 18/19-22 [seasons 4-7]
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
She carries herself pretty well. After all, SOME training had to slink in. Buffy walks pretty tall, because she isn’t about to look like a meek victim to the nasty vamps out there. But you can always tell when she’s discouraged or tired or stressed, because she’ll be slouching majorly.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Uh. Super fit. Slayer fit. But really, even without the strength, she would still be incredibly fit due to all the training she does.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Average, mostly. However, sometimes Buffy’s own strength surprises her, and she’ll end up breaking things (or houses. Or buildings. Or people.) so I suppose she’s clumsy in that respect.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
Buffy is…well. It’s best to put it in her own words. “We’re hot chicks with superpowers.” She does know she’s pretty, at least to some extent- but sometimes there are things that are more important to that.
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Pale, but not too pale. Not Dawn-pale. She lives in California, after all. She has a light tan, and her skin’s really clear.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Blonde. The color differs from completely light blonde (Season 7) or darker dishwater blonde with lighter highlights (Season 1). It ranges from straightened to curly depending on her whim, but it’s naturally curly.
9. What color are her eyes?
Greenish gray, for the most part. Sometimes just gray, sometimes a light blue, depending on the light and what she’s wearing.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Technically she’s not supposed to have any scars. Slayer healing and all. But she does have slight bite marks on her neck from the Master, Dracula, and Angel.
11. What are her chief tension centers?
Neck and shoulders, temples.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
Her…’day’ fashion sense has definitely changed over the past couple of years- possibly part of her attempts to look more adult. It can range from flowy tops to leather jackets. It’s a big contrast. But for the most part it’s pretty casual. She does have the odd set of formal clothes (skirts and such). She also likes halter tops. And tank tops. And tube tops.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
They fit pretty well- unless she’s purposefully aiming for them to be baggy so she’s comfortable, like an oversized flannel shirt or something like that. And they’re comfortable- she has to dress somewhat for comfort, because you never know when the forces of evil may strike.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
On the job- not talking Doublemeat here, but patrolling, she wears a lot of black. Mostly because blood and grass stains don’t show. She wears turtlenecks because it’s pretty cold, topped by a leather jacket and some boots. Fashionable but practical.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Normal panties, I think. The occasional thong (IT’S CANON).
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Kind of low-ish to average.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
Depending on her mood. When delivering speeches and such, her voice is pretty even. But while panicking or going on a rant, she rushes. Oh and hesitates. “And- and”
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Oh Jossspeak. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a bit like the uh ‘Californese’ in Clueless and such. It’s got a lot of ‘you knows’ and unnecessary suffixes and pop culture references and bad mashings of words that don’t make sense. “This is not of the good.” “He tried to point a shooty gun thing at me!”
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
Just plain English.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope!
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
She’s a pretty good impromptu speaker. She needs to think on her feet a lot. You see this in Season 7, when she delivers all of these speeches. You know she’s thinking it up as she speaks.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
She’s pretty articulate, I think. She gets the point across, even if there may be some rambling or such. This changes in battles and such obviously. Then, the most she’ll give is a grunted order to HOLD THAT LINE or POSITIONS.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
See, Buffy has this complex where she believes she isn’t smart. “Stupid Buffy, too dumb for college.” Which is true to some extent that books aren’t her forte. However, she is incredibly street smart. She knows how to read people and situations, she can come up with these pretty good plans on the fly. Her instincts are great. So she’s not smart in the way that Willow is smart. But she’s got her own intelligence.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
Lots and lots of thinking on her feet. While fighting, you need to improvise. It’s not just throwing punches. She’s lost the need to hesitate a long time a go.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Both intuitive and practical, if that makes sense. She has great instincts, and she trusts them- even when other people tell her that she’s wrong. Season 4 and the problem with her roommate was a great example of this. She thought her roommate was a demon, everyone else thought she was crazy. But she was right.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Highschool and about a year of college. She dropped out after her mom died to take care of Dawn, and hasn’t had the chance yet to go back.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
Uh. Anything to do with decapitation, mace wielding, crossbows etc etc etc. But she’d love to learn about something else, anything else. Because she doesn’t want to only be the Slayer.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
A little bit of both. She isn’t really that extroverted in the sense that she’ll talk to any random stranger. She’s pretty insular with her group of close friends. But she’s pretty extroverted.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Uh. She ranges. A lot of the time, she makes these snarky remarks even when things are looking grim, so it may seem that she’s not taking things seriously, but she definitely is. Buffy on the outside is not the same as Buffy on the inside. She tends to bottle her emotions anyways. So her temperament is pretty even MOST of the time. But set her off and it’s a torrent.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Depends on the new person. Mostly she’s pretty good with talking to new people- but if it’s a cute boy, for example, she’ll be completely awkward. Ben is a great example of this, and so is Riley.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
Act. Just reacting gets you killed.
10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Fight. Everyone else needs to run. But she’ll always stay and fight. Call it a sacred duty.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Somewhat morbid in her humor. You might be able to say that years of seeing death and such has warped her just in this tiniest bit. Lots of snark and glib and quippy lines. Lots of puns, too.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
Nope. There was a stint at a mental asylum though, but that’s a whole other story.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
Oh wow. I should make a list.
-Becoming the Slayer
-The first time she died.
-The day she killed Angel
-When Angel left for Los Angeles
-Her mother’s death
-Finding the truth about Dawn
-Sacrificing herself for Dawn
-When Willow tried to destroy the world
-All of her romantic failures
*AS OF CURRENT CANON UPDATE
14. What does she fear?
A lot of things. But she doesn’t show them. She fears that she won’t be able to take care of Dawn, that she won’t be able to protect her. That she won’t be able to protect the ones she loves. That she’ll never have a long lasting, normal, or stable relationship. That her whole life will just be about Slaying.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
To see the day when the world no longer needs a slayer. To go back to college. To see Dawn grow up to be an amazing young woman. To save the world.
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
That most of the time, she doesn’t know what she’s doing. She has no idea. But she has to pretend, to be strong, for the rest of them.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Buffy and her dad are…well, let’s say that they’re not on speaking terms. Hank Summers is in Spain with his secretary, living the cliché. He didn’t even come to Joyce’s funeral, so as far as Buffy’s concerned, he’s no longer part of her life. He just didn’t care. But Buffy also remembers a time when she used to idolize her dad, when she used to wait and look forward to his monthly visits. Until they stopped.
Joyce Summers is her hero. Literally. "Time's not the issue. I can stick wood in vampires... but Mom was the strong one in real life. She always knew how to make things better... just what to say."
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
DAWN. Oh man, I could tl;dr forever about their relationship. But to shorten it down- they’re a part of each other. Physically, a part of each other. To the point where they can’t be without each other, that if one of them is missing it hurts and feels hollow. There is NOTHING that Buffy wouldn’t do for Dawn.
But on the flipside, they are sisters. They annoy each other and steal each other’s clothes and all of that, but in the end they’ll always come through for each other.
Buffy used to think that it was all about protecting Dawn, shielding her from everything bad in the world. But now she’s long since realized that this is impossible, that being the Slayer’s sister will always lead the monsters to her door. So now Buffy’s concentrating more on training Dawn to be strong, to be able to take care of herself, to protect herself.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
Uh. None except for Dawn and Joyce. But she’s um. Dead. Buffy’s other relatives aren’t really mentioned in canon, but seeing as she has no contact with them at all, I can assume that their relationships aren’t exactly the best.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
WHY DO ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS OVERLAP. Willow, Giles and Xander are those that she considers family. They might as well be, considering the sheer amount of time that they spend together.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
WILLOW AND XANDER. She saved their lives from a nest of vampires. After that they were inseparable. Nothing like a brush with death to bring people together.
6. Does she have other close friends?
Tara. To some extent Anya. Oz is a huge one. Basically anyone who used to be a Scooby.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
I think she gets along pretty well with most people, but again- she’s very insular with her few set friends. She makes acquaintances a lot better than she makes friends. But friends are nice because friends also equal some normalcy.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends? Family. She’d put Dawn over any of her friends in a heartbeat. A great example of this is her fight with Giles in 5x22- ‘The Gift’.
Giles: If the ritual is complete, every living creature in this dimension will suffer unimaginable torment and death. Even Dawn.
Buffy: Then the last thing she'll see is me protecting her.
”If the ritual starts, we all die. And I’ll kill anyone who comes close to Dawn.”
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
Single. Buffy is relationship kryptonite. She’s never ever been married, and probably will never be
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Nope! Like I said, relationship kryptonite
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
Her first crush in canon was Billy Fordham. But he kind of yeah. Turned out to be a weirdo, so. There were a couple more in highschool that weren’t real crushes- Owen, etc etc. Parker in college but he was a douchebag. Angel was a huge one. Riley. Sam Winchester and to the tiniest extent that she’d never ever admit- Dean.
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
Outwardly, she likes nice guys. Nice, normal, stable, reliable guys. The kind you take home to mom. But Spike’s words describe her pretty well- she likes a little bit of monster in her man. It’s a little bit of a complex.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
NOPE. Although Dawn is technically her ‘child’ or at least, she’s Dawn’s legal guardian. She relates pretty well to Dawn in the sense that she remembers what it’s like to be a teenaged girl- but cannot relate to her sister’s constant desire to be around the supernatural. When she was that age, all she wanted to be was normal.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
Her enemies are….basically every vampire, every demon, every evil nasty planning an apocalypse- with some exceptions. While this seems like a huge list, the fact that most of her enemies end up dead seems to shorten it for some reason.
And as for rivals, there’s definitely Faith. Faith is the dark to her light, the exact opposite of her. And while they may have reached a semi-okay place in current canon, there will always be that air of competitiveness to them. After all, there technically is only supposed to be one Slayer in the world- and there’s barely room for two. Faith wants what Buffy has, and Buffy resents the things that Faith has taken from her. They have their differences in spades.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the
Kinsey scale?
Buffy likes men. A lot. And yes, I know that she later sleeps with another Slayer named Satsu in comic canon, but she hasn’t quite reached that point yet- so I’d say that she’s predominantly straight, but with some homosexual leanings. What is that, a .5? There’s also that whole UST-palooza with Faith that she’s got going on. But all in all, she’s about 90% straight.
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
Despite what people might say about her being vanilla or a prude, Buffy likes sex. Quite a lot, actually. But what she likes more than the actual sex is the relationship- she likes the cuddling and the affection and the pillow talk that goes after it, especially since she’s had some bad luck with sexual encounters (Angel and Parker come to mind.) Season six aside (where sex was her looking to fill the emotional void caused from being ripped out of heaven), sex is an important but not crucial part of her life. Although it is fun.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Turn ons: Tall men. Dark hair. Lean bodies- not too muscular, but just enough. Understanding. Depending on her mood and how comfortable she is with that person, she can like it rough or gentle. Turn offs: Jerkish behavior (more than likely to get them a punch to the face or someplace else), not being there in the morning, arrogant guys or those that are too sure of themselves.
Weird bedroom habits: OUTFITS. It’s frigging canon. Sometimes it’s fun to step into someone else’s shoes. Buffy really can be quite adventurous when she wants.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
FFF Buffy’s birthday is weird. The episodes featuring her birthday (Surprise, etc) were always aired on January 19th, or close to that. But she tells Riley that she’s ‘Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius’. Apparently Joss says her birthday’s on January 19th, but before I knew this I’d already had her birthday celebrated on the 21st. So. I’m gonna go with that.
I personally don’t know anything about astrology, but according to a website’s list of traits, I’d say Buffy is definitely not a Capricorn. ‘Respects authority, conventional, excessive perfectionism etc’ doesn’t sound very much like her to me.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
Strangely enough, she’s not spiritual at all. This might also be in part to the fact that BTVS has very little spirituality or attachment to any religion. Sure, there might be traces of some faiths (For example, Buddhism- and Angel being a Bodhisattva, etc) but by and large it prefers to keep itself apart from most spiritualities.
Buffy would definitely prefer to rely on the tangible things- herself, her friends, etc- than put her faith in something she can’t see, something that might let her down. And it’s not like she’s ever seen proof of the divine either- she’s fought demons, she’s been to hell, she’s stopped the world from ending and seen so many proofs of evil- but never divine good.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Buffy has a hugely strong personal code of morals and ethics. It’s one that she is very, very hesitant to break and would only do under the most pressing of circumstances. Just because she’s the Slayer, just because she’s been given all of this power, doesn’t mean that she can do whatever she wants- and it’s in this way that she is largely different from Faith. She never kills humans- and definitely shows her strong moral fibre when she refuses to let people kill Warren, even after he’d shot herself and Tara.
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Depends on what the belief is. Vampires that believe that humans exist for them to eat? Yeah, definitely not bringing out the tolerance buttons for them. It really does depend on the type of belief. But she’s not hesitant to tell them that she thinks it’s wrong, though. She never is.
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
She’s prejudiced against people that have committed acts that she belies are morally wrong. It takes a very long time for her to change her opinion of them. Just because she’ll save their life doesn’t mean that she thinks highly of them in any respect. Riley’s a big example of this- after she found out that he was letting vampires drink his blood…well. That relationship was pretty much out the window.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
She’s…well. The Summers family has always been pretty comfortable- they have a nice house in suburban California, and all the basic necessities and then some. But Joyce’s hospital fees and funeral fees took a lot of the money that was left over, which is one of the huge obstacles Buffy has to face in Season 6. After getting a job at the Doublemeat to tide them over, they’re alright financially. They’re certainly not as well off as they once were, but they do get by. Buffy makes sure of that.
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
Buffy used to be the most popular girl in middle and elementary school- prom queen, etc etc etc. She was used to being asked out by guys every week and having lots of friends and generally regarded as like…Jackie from Heroes season 1. But getting kicked out of your school for setting the gym on fire tends to change that. She went from being prom queen to being a social pariah in a year.
Needless to say, a lot of changes were brought on by this- and Buffy doesn’t regret them at all. She knows what’s really important- and who is really important to her, as opposed to the shallow relationships she had at Hemery. Highschool and all of its trials helped her to be strong.
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
She lives at 1630 Revello Drive, Sunnydale, California, America, The world. A modest suburban home which she shares with Dawn, Willow and Tara. It’s in pretty good condition- although the basement pipes are shot and the furniture is slightly worn.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
Shoes. And clothes. Sure, they matter less to her now than they did a couple years back, but Buffy still enjoys looking stylish, and she’s still enough of a girly girl to care about these things.
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
I’m totally skipping over her stint at Doublemeat for now. Buffy is a counsellor at Sunnydale high in canon, in which she talks to teens about their problems and such. And I’d say she’s pretty good at it- because if anyone knows how to overcome teenaged angst, it’s Buffy. Her experiences allow her to help others in this way. She enjoys it- but she’s a little bit nervous about the job, seeing as she doesn’t actually have a real college degree and all.
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
The time that isn’t taken up by patrolling and work is general spent with friends or at the Bronze. But Buffy usually likes curling up with a bowl of popcorn with Dawn and watching a couple of cheesy movies (and criticizing the unrealistic fighting in the kung-fu ones).
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
She eats whenever she has time. Buffy’s on the run a lot and so tends to grab whatever she can in the mornings. As of now she avoids fast food, because working at the Doublemeat Palace kind of cured her of any liking for it.
