The door unlocked and opened and the blond man sleepily looked up. Upon seeing not only one of his hated captors, but the garment they had forcefully stolen from him hours before, he snapped awake and sat up in furious indignation. “You actually did it,” he snarled. “What point was there in playing such a bloody cruel trick?”

The guard laughed, flinging the tattered black coat at him and watching as he scrambled to grab for it. His reflexes were fumbling and slow, both from his injuries and from the bad treatment he had been receiving here, and the coat flew over his head before he could grab it back down and angrily pull it around his shoulders.

“What point was there?” the guard sneered. “Every point in the world. That friend of yours is finally starting to believe you’re dead. You should have seen his face when he found your coat and thought it had been washed up from the wreck.”

Ginger’s lip curled. “And once he stops looking for me, that’s going to help you?”

“It’ll help the boss. As long as I get paid, I’m satisfied with anything.”

“I’ve offered to pay you if you’ll tell me how to get out of here,” Ginger retorted. “You haven’t been interested.”

“I guess because I figure that you’d gun me down if you could get hold of a weapon,” the guard answered. “You’re dangerous because of your temper and your guns. Once your arsenal is gone, you’re not much of a problem at all.” He laughed. Ginger had been beaten down more than once when he had furiously tried to fight them off and get away.

Now Ginger fixed him with an icy stare. Most people were afraid of him, both because of his violent outbursts and guns and because of his more usual, cold silence. No one knew what he was thinking or what would end up setting him off.

He did find a bit of satisfaction in the visible shudder from the guard. No matter how obnoxious he was and how much he liked taunting Ginger, he knew he was playing with fire.

“I’ll just leave you alone now,” he said, trying to cover his discomfort. “You can think about your poor friend.” And he departed, locking the door after him.

Ginger lied back down on the bed, the coat still around his shoulders. He was thinking about Lou, alright. It repulsed him to think of what these people were doing, keeping them apart and tormenting Lou into thinking Ginger was gone.

He had really been on the private plane that had gone down. The pilot had deliberately sabotaged it. He and his co-pilot had parachuted to safety, but Ginger and the other passengers had been left to fend for themselves. Ginger had survived and swam ashore, only to be captured by these madmen.

He wished his body wasn’t so weakened. And that he had his shotgun. Then nothing could stop him from getting out of here.
