Dinner was a heart-twisting, bittersweet affair. Although Lou was trying to hide it in case it didn’t pan out, his longing hopefulness was all too apparent.

Ginger had never been one of Mike’s favorite people, but Mike had certainly not wanted him dead. And he didn’t think he had ever prayed so hard for Ginger to be alive as he was praying right now. He could not bear to see that hope go out of Lou’s eyes.

“Do you know where to look first?” Mike asked at last as he twirled the expertly cooked spaghetti around his fork.

“Yeah,” Lou jumped right in, as though he had been waiting for Mike to ask that question. “I found out from Lieutenant Drumm which warehouses have been checked so far. We’ll forget about those and focus on some around Wharfs 24 and 25. The guy who worked for Portman was sometimes seen hanging around there.”

“He wouldn’t go someplace he might be found, would he?” Mike wondered.

Sickened revulsion flashed in Lou’s eyes. “He might, if he wants to be found. That’s what Mr. Norman said, anyway. It might be part of his plan, for me to go to him.”

Mike stared. “Then you might be in more danger than ever!” he cried. “Lou, you can’t look alone.”

“I don’t know who to get to help me besides you, Mike,” Lou replied. “And you need to help by branching out and checking more places. Don’t worry; I remember the other part of our plan.”

“You mean the part about calling the police before charging in,” Mike said.

“Yeah.”

“And waiting for them, if you can. What if you can’t?”

Lou sighed. “Then I’ll go in and try to be careful. I know I’ve gotta stay alive, Mike. I want to stay alive.”

“I know you’ll do everything you can, Lou,” Mike said. “But Ginger always tried too. And that didn’t stop the airplane from crashing with him in it.”

“I know.” Lou looked far away. “I wonder what he’s doing tonight, whether he’s alive or not.”

“He’s probably trying to get away if he’s alive,” Mike said. “And he’s probably telling you not to go after these guys if he’s … well, dead.”

Lou half-smiled. “I can picture that. But I’m gonna think he’s alive.”

Ginger, meanwhile, was thinking the same thing about Lou as he created a tremendous upheaval in his room, moving the old wooden table across the floor. He cringed at the horrid sound the legs made on the hard floor.

“Hey!” the guard yelled from the door. “Knock it off in there.”

Ginger only moved the table more.

The door flew open. “I won’t listen to that racket!” the guard snarled.

Ginger stepped close to him, fixing him with a silent stare. At the same moment, he quietly picked the lighter out of the other man’s pocket.

The guard didn’t notice. “Come on,” he growled. “We’ll go to the boss.”

He didn’t know that was what Ginger wanted.
