I appreciate the suggestions, it helps my thinking a lot :)

I kind of had this weird idea about it, and obviously if it's not what you want then I'll change it up, but my first concept was that Liam had a kind of colour-related synesthesia. Like, his brain associates words, sounds, voices, touch, and even people with certain colours.
For example...Niall is orange, the type of orange that's inviting and warm but still grabs your attention, and sometimes Niall's orange becomes a shimmering gold, especially when he smiles. Niall is orange, but his voice is bright green, it makes Liam see curved lines. Being at home in Wolverhampton is always navy blue, like the night sky, the kind of velvety blue that can swallow you up and make you feel whole again. When he hugs Louis, Liam feels magenta, and it prickles his fingers like when you sit on your feet for too long, it's weird but it feels kind of good.
I don't know if that even makes sense, but then again, synesthesia doesn't make sense to many people anyway. Nor do I know if that kind of synesthesia is real, but there's so many reported varieties that it isn't impossible.

That's just the concept I came up with...of course, if you preferred I stick with your ideas I can certainly do that too.

I think if you try to stick with my ideas you will limit your creativity, and it would be better if you let your mind run free! So write whatever your heart tells you to :)

I know that technically synesthetes experience (it's "experiencing" color more than really "seeing" it) color in response to a specific stimulus like a number, letter, or sound, and so sometimes words are made of blue letters but sound red, or something, and I think that's an interesting aspect of it. I think a lot of works of fiction that are about or involve synesthesia play with the boundaries of it though instead of going by the textbook diagnosis, so you can always define it your own way, and if you prefer to just make people or experiences correspond with colors (or sounds! I like the idea of incorporating sound) in Liam's mind instead of specific letters, numbers or traits related to said people/experiences, I'm sure it'll come out lovely!

I'm really excited someone is trying to write this. Can't wait to read how you deal with synesthesia and also just with the emotions of realizing a friend is now something more.
