TUESDAY [cont.]
Zayn's tip, one he himself uses to remember things, is to associate the quotes with things you know, like Shaw with Niall. He picks out another quote ["Take everything you like seriously, except yourself."] and tells you to assign a lad to it. You're laughing because that quote is so Louis and Zayn knows it, too. And you think, really, this is working because you can remember that Rudyard Kipling equals monkeys equals Louis equals a passing grade in your stupid Lit test.
And you go through the list together to pick one for Harry, which is easy because as soon as you hear Charlotte Brontë's quote, "The soul, fortunately, has an interpreter- often an unconscious but still a faithful interpreter- in the eye.", all you can think of is your youngest bandmate.
You don't tell Zayn when you find one for him, and he seems perfectly okay with your silence, thankfully. But you mentally recite Oscar Wilde's words, in Zayn's smooth accent, and wonder how someone who lived so long ago can put words to something it took you forever to put words to. But you run over the words again, marveling at how they flow and at how your heartbeat quickens when you think about it.
"You will always be fond of me. I represent to you all the sins you never had the courage to commit."
And you vow one day to sit down and read The Portrait Of Dorian Grey.
The one you associate with yourself, you tell Zayn. But, okay, maybe you immediately regret it as soon as you see a change in the way he looks at you, hear the deeper, softer tone he uses as he repeats it, "'He hated all this and somehow he couldn't get away.'"
Maybe, you figure, you are like this Charles Marlow fellow, always focusing on the darkness whether or not there was light to illuminate. You always see the worst in a situation, and sometimes, okay, you'd like to be more like Niall. More enthralled with the world, less jaded.
"'It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important,'" Zayn recites and you wonder if he's hiding an eidetic memory in all that enigma, and one day, you might ask him. But for now you scour your brain for who said that, where it's from, but you can't. You just can't. " Is there something the matter, Li?"
And, oh, it sounds so sweet, words dribbled in honey and let forth to pour from a sinful mouth. If you didn't hate yourself so much already, you might feel horrid for that analogy [ because, yes, you may not know that quote was from Arthur Conan Doyle but goddamn it, you know what an analogy is].
"There's nothing wrong," you lie. Zayn can tell, but he's too kind to call you out on your bullshit. And really, nothing is wrong. You're just tired. So, so tired, and this isn't helping in the least.
And maybe Zayn says that you'll stop for the day, maybe tells you to get some rest because you look like hell. Unlike you, you know Zayn's not lying because Zayn may be a lot of things [like clever and smart and talented and the star of your fantasies], but he is not a liar. Not like you.
And, okay, an extra few hours of sleep sounds nice and you say that, but what you're really saying is that Zayn ought to come and lie with you instead of retreating to his bunk and maybe it doesn't come across like that, but it's what you mean.
But you're watching Zayn curl under the blankets and scan through his music and you are so lonely.
