Summary: In the year 2114, Nick Grimshaw is the voice behind the morning broadcast for a new England’s BBC -- the voice behind the Counsel heading an England that has regained international supremacy through colonialism and violence, and domestic supremacy through the oppression of its people. While England’s new colonies need to earn their peace, England’s own poor are expected to earn their keep by servicing the rich. Such service is often done by ‘Orphans’ -- the youth of the poor sent off for grooming in training schools and, eventually, sold to the wealthy to use as they please. That’s how, under the heavy hand of his father, a leader on the Counsel, Nick reluctantly finds himself in possession of Louis. With Louis’ presence constantly in the back of Nick’s mind, he begins to question the very culture he was raised in, and the ideals he’s required by his job to spread across the nation. Even as Louis learns for the first time what it means to be given the freedom to make his own choices, Nick learns that in his life, that’s the one luxury he’s never really had.
