SVH Senior Year #32: Road Trip

Nov 27, 2009 01:31

Well, well, well. It's been far too long since we've delved into the emotional and troubled world of Senior Year, but with thanks to eBay, Australia Post and the letter E, we're headed down that road again. Prepare for angst. Seriously. Anyone who's ever read an SY book knows that these characters aren't even people -- they're walking, talking ( Read more... )

Also, the characters in this series confuse the shit out of me. Why did they even bother to create the character of Andy? They had a perfectly good "super zany friend" with Winston. Yes, Andy eventually turns out to be gay, but I think they only did that because they realized that Andy and Winston are the exact same person with different hair color. Evan Plummer started off in the series like someone I might have hung out with in high school. Of course, I went to high school in the early to mid-'90's, and so the music I listened to and such was appropriate then, this book was closer to 2000, so he would have horribly backwards. Also, he was not Asian when the series began, but since they apparently couldn't find any blue-eyed, dark haired models with low enough self-esteem to appear on the cover of a SVHSY book, the text within began to reflect the cover, and not the other way around. Jade Wu. . .wasn't she a year behind the twins in SVH? Somehow she has jumped a grade, and instead of being a shy dancer with controlling parents, now she hasn't seen her father since she was ten. If we are creating completely new characters that we already had, why are we totally re-writing the history of characters we already had? Tia is an excercise in stereotypes. She has about 2,456 siblings, and her parents own a bodega of some sort. Her favorite foods are huevos rancheros, and nachos from the mall apparently. Speaking of stereotypes, I remember vividly the horror I experienced when I read the passage of Maria's family sitting down to a wonderful dinner of fried chicken and watermelon. What is wrong with these people? As for Enid (who we see a grand total of I think thrice in the entire series), I wonder how they explain the fact that she went from 1)dorky, clingy Enid in SVH to 2) gothy-y, black hair and tattooed Enid in SVHSY to 3) Alexandra Rollins in SVU. I guess that's not as bad as the Elizabeth suddenly becoming a drunken slut in SY, and suddenly forgetting that any of that ever happened by SVU. (Not to mention the fact that she was broken up with TBT by the end of SVH to get with Devon Whitelaw.)

What I'm getting at here, is that I love SVHSY, and I'm glad someone is back on re-capping these books.

You know, absolutely nowhere in your (extremely accurate and awesome) first paragraph did I get that you liked SY. I have to say, I feel exactly the same way.
