Sweet Valley High #41: Outcast
I'm really happy the cover image was available on
Amazon. The 80's hair is awesome. I think Molly's head looks a bit like a butt.
Will anyone ever speak to Molly Hecht again? (The answer to this is, "Not for like a hundred pages.")
Last time on Sweet Valley High: Heroically deaf Regina died at Molly Hecht's house.
Liz comes off the stage from giving her eulogy. She is so melodramatic about her crying I want to smack her even though her friend just died. She apparently has been shedding “heart-wrenching tears of grief” since Regina died (several days ago; Liz must be dehydrated) and she puts her fist in her mouth to hold back the sobs. I don't see how those two things go to together, either she's holdin' 'em back or she ain't.
Anyway, Liz takes it upon herself to go talk to Bruce and Amy. She tells them that Regina “understood” and said so in her letter. What?!?! I go back and read the letter. She says they drifted apart and Amy couldn't have broken them up if they were in love. She doesn't say, “mackin' on my bf at that bbq was totally understandable.” Bruce cries like a girl. And Amy thanks Liz for saying so; Liz thinks they have a moment of “looking straight into each other's hearts” which hasn't happened since Amy returned from CT. Man, Liz if you can see into people's hearts you should've warned Regina about her heart murmur!
Jeffrey drops Liz home and she wonders aloud to him why Regina ever took drugs because she's “pretty” and “confident” (read: only losers do drugs!). All the Wakefields are home, including Steven. Liz thinks Steven is there because he knows how Liz feels since
Tricia died. Actually I bet he knows how Bruce feels what with the being a jerk with her up until she died and then deciding he's tragically still in love with her.
Ned and Alice give the twins and Steven the “drugs are bad” talk. Seems a bit late in life for that. Jessica loudly announces it's all Molly Hecht's fault that Regina is dead. Yeah, that Molly how dare she... be in the general vicinity when Regina died? It's not like she forced the coke up Regina's nose or used her magic powers to make her heart explode.
Jessica decides she was a bitch to Regina during Regina's life, so now that she's dead she needs to do something to “make it up” to her. I finally understand why Jessica is so horrible! She thinks she only has to be nice to dead people! Anyway, Jessica asks Cara and Lila for help with a suggestion of what she should do. They got nothin'. But they do see Molly eating her lunch. They think she's got a lot of nerve being there. How dare she attend the school that she goes to!
Molly tries to go talk to Justin Belson. He won't talk to her because he's still upset. Molly is sad. Part of her blames herself for what happened but then she also wonders why no one blames Bruce, Amy, Jan, Buzz or Regina herself. These points are not addressed in this book.
Then Molly goes home. Of course her parents are mad at her for having a party and doing drugs. But they're also really creepy in an emotionally abusive way. They tell her that they'll never forgive her, that it's her fault the “lovely” girl is dead. And when Molly wants to go to a different school, they tell her she has to keep going to SVH and take “what's coming to her.” No wonder she's on drugs with these winners.
Jessica calls of meeting of the silly high school sorority. She wants to start a college fund in Regina's name. The money will go to someone who can overcome obstacles in life (like being heroically deaf). That's a nice gesture, but I really don't want Jessica deciding who gets college scholarships;she'll give it to hot boys.
Liz is still melodramatic about Regina being dead. Jeffrey gives her
another poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay to read. Jeff is really sweet. But someone at the Millay estate is seriously doing more drugs that Molly to let SVH publish her poems.
Molly sees Liz and Jeff and tries to talk to Liz. But Liz, being the mature one, refuses to talk to her. Molly feels alone in the world. She wanders around Sweet Valley and comes to the cemetery. She thinks Regina is the only person she can talk to. But, of course, Regina's grave has another visitor. It's her brother Nicholas. He yells at Molly and tells her she killed his sister.
So then Molly is all depressed, and who should call when Molly gets home? Buzz, the drug dealer. He tells her how he understands and he's so sorry people are mean or whatever. Being a drug dealer, he really just wants her money of course. The police are looking for him so needs cash to get out of SV.
Alice brings home Chinese for dinner. This is apparently an event. Then Ned offers to do the financial stuff for Jessica's college fund. He says he does it all the time. What kind of law does he practice? Every kind?
Jeffrey makes Liz feel guilty about being mean to Molly. Go, Jeffrey! She decides to call... Justin. What? Why not Molly? I don't get it. Justin wants to know why the fuck she's calling him if she's worried about Molly being isolated. Good question, Justin. After Justin hangs up on her (he's trying to stay away from Molly because of the bad crowd she runs with), Liz simply frets over poor Molly. Why don't you call her!?!
Molly debates about whether or not she should go see Buzz. Eventually she does. They meet at the bar, Kelly's and Molly buys beer for them. He tells her they have a connection and she understands him or whatever. Then he gets her to do marijuana. Not Mary Jane! He tells her he wants her to come away with him, he just needs some money. Then he convinces her to take out her college savings so they can go. Drug dealers are bad, bad men!
Nicholas pays a visit to Casa Wakefield. Jessica thinks this is a lovely time to hit on him. She's all class. Nicholas really wants to talk to Liz though. He feels badly about what he said to Molly yesterday. Funny how neither of them think about the words they say before they say them. He wants Liz to talk to her in school and let Molly know he's sorry. Why does no one attempt to contact her themselves?!
Despite this plea from the dead girl's brother, Liz decides she's not going to talk to Molly. Because she's the sensitive and compassionate one. Instead she goes to see Justin, who's having trouble with English. She tells him she'll help him with English if he helps her with Molly (like it's Let's Make a Deal or something). She says someone has to tell Molly this all wasn't her fault. WHY DON'T YOU DO IT YOURSELF YOU CRAZY BITCH!?
Ugh. Finally, finally, after Justin blows her off, Liz thinks she might have to talk to Molly. Jessica thinks it's horrible that Liz would deign to speak to Regina's “murderer.” But then Jessica's also hitting on the grieving brother so what's she know?
Molly goes to the bank to take out her money, and Liz catches her there by contrivance. Liz says that “Justin and she” need to talk to Molly. What's she got him in her pocket? Molly gets mad because Justin won't talk to her and she wants to know why he'll confide in Liz, which he didn't really, Liz is just making it sorta seem that way. Molly gets pissed and actually tells Liz to shove it, which is awesome.
Justin, of course, has had a change of heart. He does care about Molly after all! Now he wants to help her. Except, Molly's not in school anymore. Justin wants to cut class but Principal Cooper catches him. Honestly! Why do they only keep the students from misbehaving when it would stop them from doing something important?! Likewise, Liz wants to talk to Justin about what happened, but is intercepted by Jessica, who demands her sister write an article about the charity for her.
You'd think Liz would tell Jessica this wasn't a good time because Molly's about to run away. But she's a doormat around Jessica, so they go to the Oracle office. Penny and Olivia are there and then Mr. Collins enters. Would you believe he actually says something smart instead of just letting the kids do whatever they want? I know! I was shocked. He tells them people at the school have been horrible to Molly, that they're just using her as scapegoat and acting like she has no feelings. Because Mr. Collins is handsome, Jessica immediately believes him.
Of course, this means Mr. Collins noticed Molly's plight but he never acted on it or tried to help her himself, as an authority figure. They leave that shit up to Liz in Sweet Valley.
Justin attempted to go see Molly, this makes him the first. However, her lovely parents wouldn't let her have visitors. When he gets back home, Liz phones again. She says, “Oh, I forgot to mention, I think Molly is running away.” Justin is like “HOLY SHIT! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THIS BEFORE!?!' or at least that's what I assume is going through his head because she took her sweet time calling him about it.
In a moment of complete SVH contrivance, Justin and Liz drive to Molly's house together just as she's getting into her car to run away. Instead of asking her what the fuck she's doing, they decide to tail her. Shrug. When Justin sees Buzz he tells Liz to call the cops (which she has to get out of the car to do, hee, no cell phones). Then he continues to follow them by himself.
When Buzz realizes Justin is behind them, he speeds away. And... it's time for a high speed chase! Awesome. Justin cuts them off and forces the cars to stop. Then he tells Molly he “needs” her and begs her not to go. Buzz gets pissed because he needs Molly's money and pulls a knife on Justin. But Justin is able to beat Buzz in a fight because Buzz is high and it slows his reflexes or whatever. Don't do drugs, kids, or someone will knock the shit out of you.
Then the police come. They always come after every thing's over.
At school, Molly tells Liz she's going to pull her act together and stop doing drugs. Mr. Collins has finally done something and volunteered to get her counseling and talk to her parents about not being such assholes. He also says, if she stays clean and overcomes her obstacles, he will nominate her for the college fund. Heh.
