Holy frakin' crap!

I know that Sweet Valley isn't exactly known for its acceptance of difference but Annie's whole "I'm not racist but I am embarassed to let anyone know that Charyl is black" thing was just ludicrous. I'm suprised that more parents didn't bring up this faux view of racism.

I think a lot of white people who've never had much to do with real live black people assume they're not racist, because they don't bear black people any active ill-will, but they have all sorts of unexamined prejudices about them and feel really uncomfortable when circumstances bring them together.
The way Annie feels and behaves is silly, but I don't think it's really far-fetched.

Completely agree.

Great recap. I remember I totally shipped Cheryl and Steven in when I read this book. I don't think I read the following ones though, sigh.

That's true. I guess it just sounds really, really boneheaded to me.

Great recap!
This is one of those SVH I haven't read yet, but it sounds like a doozy!
I think the only thing that could be more uncomfortable than that party would be if Annie had set Cheryl up on a blind date with Charli Cashman.

obama_cons has a lot of great icons available! This one is the "Euro-Americans for Obama" and thus has the celtic knots. :)

Is there any explanation at all for how Mrs. Whitman met and dated a man from NYC without Annie's knowledge?

Maybe Annie spent so many nights "in the arms of every boy in Sweet Valley" that she didn't even notice her mom's absence...

There is an explanation, but it's uber-lame. Mrs. Whitman basically says that she and Walter had gotten interested in each other over the past few months and that she spent time with him while in NYC and talking on the phone. Clearly, Annie was too busy ho-ing it up or, uh, "cooking" to notice. Great Sweet Valley parenting, yet again.

"I’m embarrassed and I’m not even there!"

You just said a mouthful there.

I've read a recap of the next book, and it's kind of the same thing. Steven and Cheryl date, yes, but they realize they're just doing it to prove something. Blah.

I totally love Cheryl in this book, though. She sounds nice and level-headed. I think that's how Liz is meant to come off as most of the time, but of course we know the truth.

I think you're one of the coolest new recappers I've seen (er, read?) in a while. Keep 'em coming!
