I really must want this bag, because this picture of me is HORRIBLE.

That's me at about age 11, rocking the Elizabeth perm, white jeans, and fucshia silk blouse.  Sorry the quality's so bad, but it's probably better for me that you can't see it more clearly!  Mom and sister: sorry to put you out here for all to see...please don't shun me.

I remember the day I bought my first Sweet Valley book...it was "Kidnapped!"  The exclamation point told me I was in for something special.  My dad thought I only wanted to buy the book because it said "hell" on the back, and he may or may not have been totally right.  I'm lucky my mom wasn't there, or she would have made me buy a duplicate of a BSC book just to placate my eight year old self.  It was such an amazing book....there was a Todd punch AND a pool push!!!  I didn't feel as cool as Jessica when I got pushed into pools in high school...in fact, my swimsuit top fell down in front of my crush and I was humiliated.  But I couldn't leave because my dad wasn't coming to pick me up for 45 more minutes.  I loved Elizabeth and Todd.  I wanted a boyfriend who was good at basketball and drove a cool car (I thought a Datsun was cool.  What did I know, I was eight?) and punched people for me.  Jeffrey and Tom were really nice, but they were so boring!  Todd was always more exciting, and he even dressed up like a cheerleader to make up with Elizabeth when she cheated on him with Ken!  I never had a boyfriend who would have forgiven infidelity like that!

I loved Elizabeth, too!  We both liked to read and I even permed my hair after I read "The New Elizabeth."  It looked just as awesome as Elizabeth's.  Jessica taught me how to act out of malice and not feel a thing.  I was able to be a complete and total bitch to anyone I pleased, and I never cared!  Except I didn't really have that many friends because I was so mean...but who needs friends when you have Elizabeth and Jessica?  I especially loved Lila...she had a pool with a slide and everything!  Where I'm from, that's how you know you're super rich.

Sweet Valley was not without it's hardships, though.  To this day I am terrified of cocaine because of poor Regina.  I was the president of SADD in high school and tried to make "On the Edge" required reading for elementary students, because it totally worked for me.  I'm sure the laughter was out of appreciation for thinking outside the box, and not because they thought my idea was dumb.
I never drank at my prom because I knew vodka was really dangerous...just that little bit and Sam died and Elizabeth went to jail and Margo came to Sweet Valley!  She was the most evil person I'd ever read about in a young adult fictional series!  She was even more evil than William White!

I loved Sweet Valley so much that I read it walking through airports, got in trouble for reading it in class, and got grounded for staying up late at night reading past my bedtime.  And it was worth every. single. second.

Thank you, Francine Pascal!!  Without you, I wouldn't be a 27 year old married woman who's goal in life above all else is to become a perfect size 6.
