Back in elementary school, my first crush disappeared between school years. She didn't live near me, so I had no idea what happened to her. There in one grade, gone the next. This has always bothered me and I occasionally try to find her.
Unfortunately, her name is fairly common. Not "Smith" or "Jones" common, but it's no "Huffstatenfieldweissman." Well, lately I discovered copies of old phone books online. So I went through and found those with her last name who a) lived in my town and b) disappeared between the right years. With only a casual inspection so far, there's only one candidate, so I googled his name with "daughter ."
The hit at the top of the list is an article about a man who died just a few days ago. It includes a quote from his daughter of the appropriate name. His obituary puts him attending a university in my state at the right time, obtaining a degree the year she disappeared. There's a link to her Facebook profile, but unfortunately her age/birthday isn't public.
So first, this must surely be the same man from the phone book. I've got a match on first name, middle initial, and last name and he was in the right state at exactly the right time. Second, he just happens to have a daughter with the right name? What are the odds of that??? On the other hand, what are the odds that I would just happen to do this within days of his death??? I only do this every few years, not constantly.
But she just lost her father, so now I figure I best wait before sending her a message out of the blue to see if it's indeed her. For all I know, she doesn't even remember me. If only I could find her age....

Holy flippin' crap! Apparently she's the correct age!
