There's a Monsoon in my lagoon! Why is Omaha experencing monsoon... because it's Omaha and thats why I love it here! we are in a sever thunderstorm warning and tornado watch, Hail damage is a possibility as the hail stones are about the size of a ping pong balls. Lincoln is in a tornado warning Creighton and UNL are in a game delay for baseball waiting for the weather to calm down. I love weather in Omaha.
The word "monsoon" which means season, is most often applied to the seasonal reversals of the wind direction along the shores of the Indian Ocean, especially in the Arabian Sea, that blow from the southwest during one half of the year and from the northeast during the other. That's why its reduntant to say Monsoon SEASON... it's like saying Season season.
As monsoons have come to be better understood, the definition has been broadened to include almost all of the phenomena associated with the annual weather cycle within the tropical and subtropical continents of Asia, Australia, and Africa and the adjacent seas and oceans. It is within these regions that the most vigorous and dramatic cycles of weather events on Earth takes place. However being from Arizona I have witnessed what have been called monsoon storms, and have found out that this season of almost daily thunderstorms is often called the Southwest, Mexican or Arizona monsoon.
It is also sometimes called the Desert Monsoon as a large part of the affected area is desert. As much as 70% of rainfall in Arizona and the desert region occurs during the summer monsoon. Many desert plants are adapted to take advantage of this wet season in the usually-dry area. I have Because of the danger of being caught in the open when these storms suddenly appear, many places in Arizona have thunderstorm warning systems.
The storms are awesome and make me happy even though the flood my basement, damage my truck, and wash away my garden. I just wish people wouldn't call this a monsoon Season. It's like Saying PIN number, GPS System, ATM Machine, how many more redundant language terms can you think of?
