Imagine, if you will...

A rather interesting story:

Sophomore year I almost ran over a gal who jumped in front of me. I was, to be honest, a little upset that I didn't see a pedestrian jump in front of my car trying to flag me down until almost it was too late. Her attempt literally almost caused me to get rear ended and sideswiped which would have killed her and ruined my truck... luckily that didn't happen and I just sat there a little freaked out. She took this opportunity to ask me for money. The details are a little boring but the story ends with me frantically running across Creighton trying not to be late for a final, $20 dollars more broke than I was and feeling as though I had sucker written on my forehead.

The story continues almost two years later.

This morning I left the post office to the sound of "sir, I am sorry! Sir! Excuse me." I turn around and make eye contact with a lady who looks oddly familiar. "oh sir excuse me, it's just my kid is in midland--I don't know if you know where that is at--you don't have to give me a ride"

"I know." I can't give her a ride; I need to go to work.

"Yeah but look I am six dollars short of a taxi" I think to myself, 'uh starting to sound familiar...' she continues, "you see my kid is hurt.... bad, and I can't get to the hospital." Déjávu! I still haven't recognized the person, but I am sensing a con, "and to prove to you that I am not trying to swindle you or anything I have a phone number to call." Bingo! I recognize the person that only two years ago had me drive her all over kingdom come, the six dollars she needed before came in the form of a 20, a free ride around town, and though she seemed in a hurry to meet her taxi once in a vehicle she seemed to have time to run all sorts of errands. I almost kicked her out of my car to get to my final on time. The whole time she kept promising me that she was not a con, and she kept telling me that she moved from Arkansas. I told her my grandma lived in the same city she claimed to be from.

I recognize the line, "I am not a con." I think that Regan ruined those words for all future cons.

This is the point that I tell her that I think I helped her before. "No you couldn't have I just moved back from spring..."

"Springdale." I finish her story for her. her eyes open wide, "yeah, I remember from last time. I don't have time to help you today, but we keep crossing paths like this and I might help you next time, if you have a different story."

"Sir look, I don't think it was me you helped, you couldn't have, please I just need 6 dollars for a taxi."

"Look ma’am I really am sympathetic to your situation, but...,” at this point I tell her to have a nice day and ask her to excuse me as I am in a hurry. I look at her closely while she starts to cry and tells she just needs six dollars. I wanted to tell her “it was soo you!”

Even though I knew her story, recognized her, and called her on her story--she still denied meeting me before, I thought that maybe I was wrong, but as I got in my car and drove away, I knew, KNEW that it had to be her.

helping people, sop
